Good day everyone. My new to me Nikon F2 is almost mint. The film advance crank moves smoothly however when it comes back it does not go back over the camera. It stays just exposing the red dot to let you know that the shutter meter is on and ready.

any suggestions?
Thank you.

Try firing the shutter or opening the back.

Dont force anything.
So film advance works fine?
It shouldnt lock on.
May just need some lube or it may be something else more involved. Cant remember what the internals look like, theres probably a you tube vid somewhere, its not too complicated.

The F2 wind lever doubles as a meter power switch. When the lever is pulled slightly out to expose the red dot, switch contacts under the bottom plate are closed, sending power to the prism. The lever should flip easily between stowed and out (meter off and on), regardless of whether the camera is wound or shutter fired.

The switch works by a rod that goes down to the bottom of the camera, where it moves up to allow a leaf to contact a second leaf, closing the power circuit. Possibly something is blocked in this mechanism that prevents the lever from being pushed back. The bottom is easy to look at because you just need to remove the bottom plate (4 screws). I would take that off and look for anything blocking the motion of that rod and switch.

Accessing the top part of the mechanism would require removing a number of parts (wind lever, shutter dial, etc) to remove the top cover.

A side note, a small amount of corrosion in the leaf switch will block power from getting to the prism and look like a bad meter, but is easily repaired. This can be diagnosed by removing the prism and checking for +3V on the two contacts on the body that deliver power to the prism. If you don't get power with the lever out, check the batteries, clean the battery compartment, and take off the bottom plate and clean the switch contacts.

Thank you. I’d be too nervous to remove anything so I guess I’ll find a technician to fix it. Any suggestions please?

Take a look at Robin Guymer's thread on F2 repair. One of the beauties of the F2 is that it's not terribly complicated.
