Do you have a memory card inserted? In the D700 manual (I don't have a D800), "save/load settings" is described in the "Setup Menu" section of the manual. You need a card inserted, it can't be full, and the filename it writes to is given in the manual - so you could eject the card, load it onto a computer, and see if this file exists.

good point! I'll check. Found out it has to be seated properly, too. That was it. Now, it works! Thanks for the help.
