Any one use either of these? I'm looking to get a dslr that will work with the nikon lenses I already own, and am wondering if the extra cost for the d70 is worth it.

Standard Nikon lenses will not function with either of these cameras, that is the cameras will not meter in stop down mode as the D200 will.

As for the cameras the D50 actually has a little better renedering engine than the D70 but lacks some features such as DOF preview button, mirror lock up and a few other features. IMO the D50 is the better buy of the two.

My brother purchased one last year and I found the camera to be very easy to use though I only took a handful of test shots. The camera has a good feel and operates quickly, but so will the D70, D70s, D80, and all of the Nikon digital SLRs.

My prefference would be the D200 since I think this represents the best value of their entire DSLR line.

If money were no object the Canon 5D would be my first choice.

As it stands I keep refusing to commit to a D camera but I'm sure I will eventually.

Depends upon which lenses. AF-D and AF-G lenses (the autofocus ones) will work just fine - and over the last 10-15 years these are more or less standard. The older, manual focus lenses, such as the AI and AI-S lenses will still work, but the camera will not meter through them, and of course, you will be focusing manually.

The Nikon D50 is cheap, and the D70 is supposedly 'better' - but if you were to buy any Nikon camera, the D80 is probably the best bet.

Canon is on a roll currently - though their 'full frame' sensors are mighty expensive, so the lesser version are probably the best choice from a value point of view (and they have the same crop factor as Nikon). I do not see the real advantage of full frame unless you are laden with a huge investment of lenses and you don't want to buy another wide lens to handle your widest angle shots ... ?

Both Canon and Nikon are both great cameras and capable of taking great pictures - you won't go wrong with either!

thanks. I had the impression that my AF-d lenses would work. Guess I'll have to look into it further.

Your AF-D lenses WILL work just fine. You will have zero problems. The other poster is wrong.

Here is a Link to a lens compatibility chart of lenses to Nikon bodies.

In my haste I was thinking of manual focus lenses since I don't own or use AF lenses for my Nikons. Thanks for pointing that out.

Sorry for the strong wording - I have an old D100 that caused me to go through this several years back.

I thought the purpose of this forum was to discuss where digital and analog meet. NOT a digital only forum.
The title of the forum is 'Digital & Traditional Capture'. What is the problem with discussing digital cameras for digital capture?

Enjoy the D80 it is a very capable camera, now look at your computer and think about how you are going to handle the new files that you will be working with.
Also look up Thom Hogan, he writes an ebook that is a very good user manual for Nikon cameras.
