This maybe old information to some, but I just picked up one of the AF-P lenses for my wife's D3300. I mounted it, but could not use the manual focus at all - the focus ring turned endlessly without stopping or changing the focus. I though I had a bad lens.

Then I read that the camera may need to have a firmware update, so I updated it and voila, it works.

This is such a weird design to me. Essentially, it seems that the focus ring is now only used for digital input - it is not mechanical. The camera then does the focusing electronically itself based on how you turn the ring. That seems so unnecessarily complicated.

Nevertheless, this kit lens focuses nearly instantaneously! It is uncanny how fast it is, and it is an entry-level camera. It is just weird where technology leads.

I just wanted to put that out there, in case anyone was thinking about buying one of these lenses.

One more thing - the crop (DX) AF-P lenses will not work on my beloved D300, which bums me out. For some reason the FX ones will work, but not the DX. That is annoying, considering that the D300 is a crop sensor body.

The D300 was probably made before there were DX lenses and lenses that focused electronically.
It is a similar situation with the Canon 10D, which pre-dated Canon's EF-S lenses.
