I recently discovered a newly-acquired FM that I bought to re-seal and sell here has the ability to shoot non-AI lenses using stop-down metering. After playing with it I came to the conclusion it's an updated Nikkormat......is it possible to meter AI and AI-s lenses on a non-AI body (F, F2, Nikkormat, etc.) using stop-down metering? I kind of have a hodge-podge of Nikon bodies, what I really need to do is just break down and buy an F3, but my FG and Nikkormats work well.

The FM was the direct successor to the Nikkormat, and occupied the same position in the lineup. It was a new design, of course.

Yes. How? It is in the manual and varies so slightly between models. But, in a nutshell, you push the metering lever out of the way.
If your AI/S lenses haven't lost the "rabbit ears", then no need for stoop-down metering.

You should not have a problem with AI, AIed or AIs lenses they are the same as pre AI.

Except series E and the late pancake 5cm /1.8 AIs.

These last don't come with rabbits ears.

Even these lenses can be used stopped down.

If you have pre AI lenses you have a problem with FGs etc. physical damage...

Any questions? My current FTn with my previous 24/2.8 AI Nikkor mounted to it. Camera thinks it has a Nikkor-N 24/2.8 pre-AI attached.

If you're talking about putting a Series E or an AF lens on your FTn, then what you do is move the pin all the way over to the right, so it's where the prong would be if you mounted a lens equipped with one. Mount the prongless lens, then meter as you would if you'd put a pre-AI Nikkor that has an automatic diaphragm, but no prong. Turn meter on, then, hold down the DOF preview while adjusting the aperture to the correct exposure.

APUG delivers again, thanks guys.

I do have some Series E glass and a few lenses without the rabbit ears, my F mount system is a mix and match of glass and bodies but a very nice one.

I had forgotten that the FM had the flip up AI follower. I just played with mine for a minute to double check it. The FM is supposed to be smaller and lighter than the Nikomats.

We seem to have losts some posts (from 19/1/15) from this thread.

e.g. that some AIed lenses will not be compatible with the F4 (& probably FG, FG20 and EM)

e.g. 28mm /3.5!

need to read compatibility charts before you buy

That was a different thread about the F4 and non AI lenses.
