Repairing a Nikkormat, F2, Pentax etc - all will cost the same hourly rate. So if taking your camera apart, fixing it, putting it back together takes four hours - that cost will be the same whether it is a $50 camera or a $1000 camera.

Of course, I was just surprised at the fixed cost of the repair from Abeline. I'd think they'd need to look at the camera first to determine what is wrong with it and then estimate the number of hours required to fix it. At least that's been my experience with the process used by other repairers.

A quick follow-up:

The camera is currently at Authorized Photo Service for repair. The repair estimate was higher than I was hoping for, but I decided to go for it since the camera is worthless to me in its current state and it should be good for years after it returns.

On the plus side, the experience so far has been very good - I received a very detailed repair estimate and I was able to call and speak to the actual technician who will repair the camera when I had questions about it. Calls and emails have been answered/returned promptly. They estimate a week to turn the repair around so I'll post again once I have the camera in-hand.
