Alexandre, the 85 f/2 Nikkor lens is designed as a portrait lens and is slightly soft. I had one for a short while before moving it along; this lens came out in the late seventies.

There is also an 85 f/1.8, which appeared in the sixties, it is contrasty and sharp, compared to the later 85 f/2. I haven’t used this lens, but a friend has one bought new in the late sixties, lovely prints.

I have tried the AF 85 f/1.8 it was also soft, even looked soft through the viewfinder.

I have the 85 f/1.4 it is a brilliant lens, but should be used with its deep hood cover as this lens can suffer from flare reasonably easy; sharp, contrasty and a pure joy to use.

Along with my 105 f/2.8 these are my two favourite lenses.

Actually now Mick, i'm using the 85mm f1.8 MF, a friend of mine lend to me to try it out, i did so far 3 rolls of film but i'm not sure if i really want this, i will use it one more week to see the results.

I've read out there that because the f2 is so sharp, when you use it with tri-x for example, the pictures aren´t so good, but i never tested none of both and made a comparison, i have 3 trix to develop, and i've tested the 1.8 non ai with my D5000 and it looks damm great to me
!

Anyone out there have tested both of them on BW?

I have a 85 mm 1.4 manual focus lens (#199293) as good as new. A very nice piece of Nikon glass. I bought it several years ago but never used it, since I'm more a wide angle guy and don't like making portraits. I'm going through my lenses right now and will sell some shortly to get some money for new equipment. This lens will have to go as well.

Let me know if you're interested and what offer you want to make me, before I put it up for sale on this forum.
The glass is excellent, also the body. No oil leaks, no scratches, no fungus. I wonder if this lens if ever used at all.

Comes with original front and back cover. Shipping will be from The Netherlands, Europe.



Since I never used it, I can't tell you what this kind of lenses is capable of on a MF Nikon camera loaded with B&W film.
To make shure the aperture rings work properly, I tried it on my Digital Nikon D200 (I didn't say that out loud, did I??).
As a small and very unprofessional test, I made one simple shot indoors of an old Nikon F body lying around.
This image came straight out of the camera - no Photoshop tinkering added (only resized for internet).

Um, no, it doesn't. It still is a contradictory, counter-intuative load of ill-considered "fluff". If anything, it exagerated the stupidity of the claim as it details 2 lenses that beat the unbeatable.
