with F3 as body, most shots I avoided the extremes of the zoom, where the distortion is greatest on this lens.

I always thought that lens was bad. Sorry mate!
You have a great camera so why not give it a great lens. 35 f2 or 50 f1.4
What you have is jist not the right combination.
