here are some sample spreads:

Also a great article on converting an older Polaroid camera into a rangefinder 4x5.

WARNING: there *IS* quite a bit of hybrid stuff in this issue, so just wade around it if you find it objectionable.

Anyway, it is free to download to registered users. Hopefully some of you will find it a good issue worth reading.

Cheers

So far I've liked what I've seen (I'm referring to the previous issues, haven't seen this one yet). I just wish there was an option to buy a print issue - I'm not very fond of reading mags on the computer, but I try...!

Good job, please keep it up!

Sanjay

Nice issue, I've read it yesterday. So, are you thinking about becoming an APUG sponsor?

I agree! I'd pay for a subscription to a print edition. I don't read very well at the computer. I read on the couch, in bed, and on airplanes.

That is the goal -- but first we have to become profitable. Currently hemoraging money. Within a year we hope to have several versions of each issue available -- the goal is for the 75dpi downloadable versions to continue to be free, while high-res CD-ROM and print-on-demand versions will be for sale. If I can find a willing graphic designer to convert Issues 1-3 into the new vertical format, we can then offer a book version of the entire Volume 1 -- all six issues in one bound volume.

Until then wish us luck (and do try to support us -- for without your support we cannot possibly survive).

And lastly: we are actively looking for medium and large format photography to showcase in our magazine. Send pmail to editor "at" magnachrom "dot" com with a contribution proposal.

Cheers,

I do like to have a mag in my hand to read, however, I also do enjoy being able to zoom in and make the print larger!

If you have access to a printer that can print 11x17", there are instructions inside the magazine for printing it. I suppose that if you don't have a printer that size, you could take it to a place like Kinko's and have it printed.

It might also be nice to open the articles one at a time directly from the website. That would be easier than downloading the whole thing and scrolling through it.

Hi!

I love your e-zine! Let me count the ways:

1) You are about the only guy that will review a product and tell the bloody truth! Just because a product may have a wart or two doesn't mean it shouldn't be bought and used. It just helps a lot to know about them up front. I just ordered a new Gaoersi Pro Set handheld 4x5 based largely on your very honest review. I also bought a roll of metal tape<g>.

2) You have really interesting 'mod' articles. I just bought an aquarium air pump and I'm about to upgrade some film holders to vacuum holders. What a great articles that was. Do your modified holders still work?

3) You publish people I know from APUG: Jorge Gasteazoro, Sandy King. I thought Jorge did a great job and I recognized Sandy's prints having seen them at P.F. in Montana.

4) It's free. Personally, I'd pay for the online access! I think you should consider charging for Vol 2 and onwards. Leave Vol 1 as an enticement but you sound like you need to generate cash. I am not sure a book will do it (but I will buy it when it comes out). The task of publishing a paper edition is a big hassle, just ask the Emulsion folks.

5) More than a few times, I look thru an issue and see one or two articles on topics that I've often wondered about but never saw covered anywhere else.

6) Your digital articles remind me how awful it would be to work at a computer all day and then work for hours at one in my 'darkroom'.

7) The accessibility of the reader gallery is a real treat without all the philophical handcuffs that LensWork imposes. I may take you up on your submission request.

Thanks for your great work. Please find a way for me to subscribe to something - I feel guilty getting all this great stuff for free.

Great magazine with some great articles - more power to you! I was quite surprised at the flurry of childish whining your registration process has caused on the alt-photo-process site though: people complaining that they have to sign away their first-born; opinionated bores saying you should hide your head in shame; ridiculous legalese; etc, but also some very positive comments - it took one poor soul an hour to download, but she was very positive about the magazine.

I liked what I saw, and the download process was - for me - quite fast, but I'm lucky to have broadband rather than dial-up.

Looking forward to more.

Regards,
Neil.

One thing that would be an improvement in the website would be the option to right-click and download the file without opening it, opening Acrobat, and rendering all the pages, which I might not want to do at that particular moment. It would also speed things up for people with slow connections.

David, you should be able to right-click on the download link and do a "Save Target As" in IE, after you have logged in to the site. In Firefox, your option will depend on your browser settings. Not sure how it works in Safari. I never open the PDF in the browser, I open it only after downloading.

I'm using Firefox, and that's the way it normally works, but have you tried this from the _Magnachrom_ page? Instead of pointing directly to the PDF file, the link points to "IssueDownload.php"

On the Dead Link Removed page, the "Download" link points to the Dead Link Removed page, probably because it needs to check if you have signed in. After you sign in, the "Download" link still points to the same location, but brings up the Open/Save dialog box - please see the attached screenshot.

However, if in the past you had selected the option "Open with Adobe Reader..." and also checked the option "Do this automatically for files like this from now on.", Firefox will 'remember' to open any PDF file in the browser without asking you.

Hope that helps....

Yeah, I saw the posts by Judy Seigel -- she and I had a pleasant email exchange regarding MC registration. I'm pleased she even noticed us! Think of her as a vociferous 60s radical.

Anyway, thanx for the kudos. We look forward to chatting with some potential advertisers at PhotoExpo in NYC later this month.

It appears that Magnachrom will have some substantial publication delay. The article I wrote about the 14x17 Lotus was in two parts, with the second one scheduled for the next issue of Magnachrom.

With the agreement of Magnachrom's publisher I decided to put Part 2 on my site. Here I talk about ULF logistics, and my first experiences in contact printing, and the work I have done in the past two years on in-camera Ilfochromes, but this time on a ULF scale

You can find the entire article Dead Link Removed

Enjoy!

Cheers

Marco you mention I guess X-ray film? Where are you getting it in Europe? Do you know of a source of lith film like Freestyles?

You also mention cutting down 12x20 to 12x17. Why?

In part 2 he mentions using 12x16 with special snap in baffles for the 14x17 holder, maybe for 12x17 film he just doesn't use the end baffles. In any case seems like an interesting size. Great article Marco, thanks for posting the conclusion.

Thank you, Colin: now I can prove that at least _one_ person has read the article ...

... you are 100% correct: I tried the 12x16 holders (that I use for the 12x16 Ilfochrome paper, they are the 14x17 holders internally reduced to 12x16 in the way you so clearly describe) and I can fit a 12x17 film in them.

Nick, I can get some X-ray film from a doctor friend of mine, but I was unable to find an on-line supplier in Europe. I am aware of Dead Link Removed in the US that sells 14x17 X-ray Fuji Film but I never tried it.

Has anybody ever ordered through Quad City?

Cheers!
