I think you should write an article for APUG on how a photographers website should be.
How it looks is upto you. But if you want to get high visibility in search engines, then just do some google searches on phrases you want to be found on and see what other people have done to obtain visibility.
Note for example, that a search on "black and white photography" doesn't turn up a single flash site in at least the first 30 sites and probably a lot more.
And just get as many incoming links to your site as you can.
High Search engine position doesn't just happen. It can take months or years to get on page one. And it requires constant submittal to other sites to get incoming links and a good deal of tweaking of copy text before you achieve it.
Search engines are oblivious to how your site looks. In short if you want visibility, the most important thing is content and not design. If you compromise search engine visibility of content in favour of design (visual bullshit), then don't expect high search engine visibility.
