i want to introduce myself to the forums. i stumbled upon this site while doing a bit of research on film cameras. i recently picked up a well used (but well functioning) nikon fe with a 50mm f/1.8 series e lens. i paid $75 for it and i think i did well.
anyhow, my history in film? i took a summer high school photography class way back in 1993 - though to some maybe that's not long ago? i used my parent's canon ae-1 program and we shot only black and white. in that class, we learned to shoot and develop all of our shots. it was a lot of fun. i had not shot black and white since and have forgotten much of the processing techniques. but i find it challenging, yet fun to make a switch from the "new" to the "old". i currently use a nikon d70 primarily for my photography interests.
well now that we are expecting our first child, i thought it would be appropriate that i photograph him using film rather than digital - kind of to keep a more grounded and natural feel to the photos and hope to keep and preserve the nostalgia when he grows up.
i just wanted to say hello everyone. i'm eager to learn more about film photography...well...in that frame of mind, just continue to learn more about photography in general. i'm sure there is the share of experienced shooters as well as the new shooters like myself. i look forward to learning from all of you.
We have a lot in common, I took a summer high school photography class ....
Way Way back in 1979.
Excellent Idea with capturing the youngster on film, the memories are priceless.
Just be careful about photographing the little one in the bathtub.
I was just looking over some pics. and slide with my little guy this weekend.
Pics. of him and His Wee Willy Wilkinson exposed. Times seem to have changed.
I've heard about the overreaction to pics of kids, that seem to get parents in trouble now. If you could get your hands on a few rolls of Kodachrome, the images would be a thing of beauty. If not, definitely consider some Ektar 100 !
Ron
P.S. : Please, Always remember to enjoy the little one as much as possible.
I spent way too many years being a workaholic, now my little guy is 25.
But we spent the weekend playing with the Omega 45F !
Welcome Kepani! The Nikon FE was my first SLR, and still my favorite -- it's been with me everywhere. I think you did real well with that kit (I think I paid three times that amount originally!).
Hi Kepani, welcome to APUG. The FE is a nice Nikon, purchase mine new for a lot more money, and was my second Nikon (first was an EL) at the time. I still have both.
I think you are smart thinking about the future and the longevity of film to preserve the slices of time. Its the only media that has a proven track record that spans lift times.
Welcome, kepani, from near Washington, DC.
Aside from aesthetic considerations, many of us share your desire to use a technology which has demonstrated its ability to retain images for, what, about a hundred fifty years or more.
Plus making images worth keeping that long.
Nice camera. I started out with an FM2, bought new back in the mid 80's. Loved that camera. Unfortunately, it got stolen. It has been replaced, over the recent years, with an FM10, FM2n, FE, FE2, N75, N90s, and an F100. That's just the 35mm. Is that overkill? The prices are just so great. I must say, that of all these, the FE and FE2 are my favorites to actually shoot with, FM2 has the advantage in low light due to the LED exposure meter.
