Does anyone have a time they can recomend for developing the new tri-x 320 4x5 sheet film in Rodinal. Either 1:100 or 1:50? I usually use film hangers and deep tanks in total darkness. I could try it in the JOBO but I hear you lose the edge effects.

Thanks,

Well since I could not find any times on the net, I decided to wing it. I had 24 sheets of 4x5 Tri-x 320 to develope so I tried different development times and agitation intervals. I process in 2 liter tanks with single 4x5 film hangers. I mixed a new batch of Rodinal before starting each film run. I ran groups of 6 sheets together. The temperature was kept at 68 degrees and Rodinal dilution of 1:50 for all runs. All film was exposed at ISO 320. The first film run was developed for 16 minutes with film being agitated every 2 minutes. When I agitate I slowly lift hangers out of developer and tilt one direction then lower back into developer lift again and tilt other direction. Film from the first run was ok, grain looked very nice and tight, very good density. Probably could use a little more developement in my opinion, for my cold head. Next 3 film runs were at 20 minute developement times and the only thing changed was the agitation rate. One run was agitated every 4 minutes. The next run agitated every 5 minutes and the last was only agitated only twice in 20 minutes, once at the beginning of developement and once at the 10 minute mark. All negatives had excellent density and tight grain, but the negatives that were only agitated twice over a 20 minute period had really cool edge effects. I guess I would call this my version of semi stand developement. I hope somebody gets some use out of this little experiment the main thing is all negatives are very printable. This is the first time I have processed 4x5 film in Rodinal, pretty cool! I will post some photo results when I get time to print these negatives.

Thanks, Jamie. Rodinal with minimal agitation is wonderful. I'd love to try this at 1:100 (with adjusted times), too.

I process 4x5 and 5x7 TXP sheets in Rodinal in Jobo tanks. I expose at EI 160, presoak the sheets five minutes or so in water as recommended by Jobo, and then process 1:50 for 12-13 minutes, or 1:25 for about 8-9 minutes, all at 68F degrees.

Don't worry about losing "edge effects." I've yet to see any evidence that they exist in modern emulsions and believe them to be urban legends. If anybody disagrees with this, please, instead of ranting, post examples for us to see.
