Im glad to see another analog site open up but im concerned about your pricing. I mainly shoot 2 films one of them is Kodak's TMY2. I always use Freestyle and pay apx $18.50 for a 5 roll box but when i checked your site you are asking apx 50% more, Your price is almost $28.00 for it! Also i notice your Tmax100 4x5 50 sheets are apx $110! Was this an error or did i mis-read it?

TMY2 120 format

Ag-photographic: £16.95 box of 5 + £3.50 carriage

Mailshots: £3.50/ea = £17.50 for x5 + £2.95 carriage

7 Dayshop: £2.70/ea = £13.50 for x5 (that's special offer, but website says normal price is £5.19 each = £25.95 for 5!) inc delivery

Silverprint: £18.26 box of 5 + £7.00 carriage (but £25 min order)

Speedgraphic: £14.95 box of 5 + £2.95 carriage

Calumet: £14.75 box of 5 + £4 carriage

Mathers: don't stock it in 120
RK Photographic: don't stock it

Therefore, total paid for just x5 rolls of TMY2 would be:

7 Dayshop: £13.50 at the moment, but possibly £25.95 at other times
Calumet & Speedgraphic : £18.75
Mailshots & Ag-Photographic: £20.45
Silverprint: £25 or £32 dependant upon whether £25min inc. postage

Ok, on this one particular item Ag aren't the cheapest in the Uk, but they aren't the most expensive either - their prices are much the same as other retailers, especially once carriage is added on.

Besides, it's gonna take some time to settle into his market and his suppliers. Remember, this is a startup with some bounces ahead for a time. Buit things should even out if the volume goes nuts.

Kodak is tricky to price in the UK, unlike Ilford where everyone gets the same terms. Certainly though Kodak is expensive in the UK when compared to the US, but I believe Ilford is expensive in the US when compared to Kodak. This is why the best selling black and white film in the UK is Ilford HP5 and in the US it's Tri-X (as far as I'm aware)

We are aiming to be competitive - Ive had the Kodak rep in this afternoon and I've re-examined the prices of both TMX and TMY 120 5 pack and we've lowered these to £14.95. We also offer free carriage on orders over £100 to mainland UK.

I'm afraid we can't get to the crazy Guernsey price of 7 Day shop, but then sooner or later the, bizarre, VAT loophole will be closed I'm sure. but then we are a different kind of retailer who specialise, understand the products, and offer a much wider range of products (and have a phone number on our website). It's swings and roundabouts.

Best regards
Matt

Best of luck! It takes guts to start a small business, especially in this economy.

If I can make a tiny suggestion. My experience lately is that young people (secondary school and art students) get really interested in traditional photography if they get a chance to see it and try it. This is doubly true of alternative and wet-plate processes.

I'm sure you've got plenty to do in getting your business started, but when you have time to do more marketing, you might go around to art schools and art departments at community colleges nearby. Put up posters, offer student discounts, volunteer to give workshops. I bet you will get a few kids addicted to film. They are your future.

For some reason Ilford offer Delta 100 in 13x18cm and not 5x7, which is strange I know - especially as I'm a 5x7 user myself.

I'll ask them why - or maybe Simon has the answer.

Cheers, Matt. I know Ilford list that they do it, but getting hold of it seems to be quite hard for some reason.

...I've re-examined the prices of both TMX and TMY 120 5 pack and we've lowered these to £14.95...

Sounds good!

I normally get all my film from Mailshots, but I might be stocking up on TMY from elsewhere next time!

Now if you can start stocking 120 Fuji RVP100 at <£3.65 as well... :D

...I'm afraid we can't get to the crazy Guernsey price of 7 Day shop, but then sooner or later the, bizarre, VAT loophole will be closed I'm sure.

To be honest when I've compared prices previously I've not found 7Day to be that much cheaper in many cases, some times they're more expensive than other mainland companies.

Ilford HP5+ @ 7Day is £2.25,
Ilford HP5+ @ Mailshots is £2.25 !

7Day prices would work out a bit cheaper because they include carriage, but I've heard too many people refer to them as "7 Day-wait", whereas I know I can 'phone mailshots before 2pm and have the film delivered next day!

M'shots are also one of the few companies that seem to stock 120 format Fuji RTP, which I occasionally have cause to use. They don't stock the Kodak tungsten offering though, although I suppose that might change with the demise of RTP.

Either way, I for one will be keeping a keen eye on Ag-Photo's film, paper & developer offerings and prices!

I'm very excited for all the UK members on here and just wanted to compliment you on this great undertaking! As a small business owner, I understand some of the risk, opportunity cost, and energy you will put in to this.

For the record, I'm in California, USA, so I've recently switched to supporting Freestyle - hopefully you can be as good for UK as Freestyle is for Southern California!

All the best,
Jed

Well done Matt. You have generated quite a bit of interest on the FADU site ( Film and Darroom User) which contains a large portion of U.K. users. A retail site which is run by an analogue user for analogue users is a very welcome announcement in these gloomy days.

Well done Matt.
I was thinking of doing the same here in Australia a while ago, but logistically it wasn't the right time and now I'm just way too busy!
I ditto Fleath's comment: Fair shipping prices, you'll have my support as well!

All the best for the venture - I hope it is a highly successful one for you.

If your shipping to Australia-land isnt too bad you've got my business, and best of luck to you

As regards Australia - I'm going to have a very long, hard, look at every possible shipping option because I think that there is demand in Australia.

It will take some work, but I'm sure if I look hard enough it should be possible to find a reasonably priced solution.

Who wins the Ashes may also have a bearing on this.

Hi Matt,

Excellent news!

Are the two 'retail outlets' open yet?

I'm quite excited by these. I live not too far from Birmingham and the possibility of being able to pop into a shop and buy a few rolls of film without having to order 10 rolls or minimum order of £25 and pay £5+ postage on top appeals to me very much.

Let us know as soon as the shops are open and I'll be straight round there to buy something as a show of support, whether I need anything or not!

In the meantime, the mail order site looks very good, your SFX prices look pretty reasonable. I notice that the delivery cost is per order, not per item, which was a nasty shock on 'another site' I tried recently... :surprised:
