New Tmax 400 (TMY-2) Pushed to 1600- Sample Pic and Thoughts

Another quick review with a sample image of the new Kodak Tmax 400 (TMY-2) pushed to 1600, processed in Xtol. I shot the sample image with my M7. I posted a few days ago another review of this film rated at box speed (400).

Give it a read, try a roll and lets compare notes!

Thanks as well. I the only roll freestyle had a while back with intentions of trying this as a 1600 speed film to compare to delta 3200. Looks amazing considering your examples are 35mm. It's too bad kodak hasn't gotten the stuff distributed in time with all the hype.

According to the tech pub I read 3200 is it (at least with Xtol). It's good stuff. I agree with the distribution problem...hopefully the old stock of TMY will clear itself soon...very soon!

how well does it print at ISO1600? when scanning the negative, you do all these profiles and adjustments. but how well does it print from an enlarger at high ISOs?

I'm sorry but I have no information on enlarging this film as all of my work is scanned but I can tell you that a standard input color space such as sRGB or Adobe RGB 1998 would fit this film perfectly...2.2 seems nice. My scans are just about perfect with little to no work and require very little adjustment in Photoshop. The print at 1600 looks really great...especially for 1600!

Thanks Stephen. The "push to 1600" pics look promising but key to a meaningful comparison is the new TMax pushed to 1600 compared to, say, Ilford D3200 at 1600, Fuji 1600 and TMax P3200 at 1600. If you know the light conditions demand 1600 then, unless you can risk developing the whole film at the 1600 time with no loss of quality, you sacrifice the portion of the film shot at 400. You could of course simply eject the new TMax400 shot at 400 and insert a new TMax400 which you push but this doesn't gain you anything compared to inserting a high speed film unless the pushed TMax is a better film at 1600 than the three high speed films mentioned.

My shooting style is very simple...one film. I use to travel with many different films for my artworks but while shooting in Africa in 97 I decided that with a bit of testing and really looking at what I was shooting day in and day out I could cut my carry down to just a single film and keep it very simple. This is not to say that I NEVER shoot other films but rather I try to only carry one at a time and for my current artworks the TMY-2 fits the bill perfectly at 400 (box speed). The push example for me really is just an informal presentation on how this films looks at 1600...other films may or may not be better? My example is only to illustrate how this film looks pushed to 1600 and nothing else...it gives me a good idea if I need to ever push TMY-2 to 1600 what to expect. I'd love to hear any results others may have comparing this with other films pushed or faster films but for my needs again the TMY-2 looks just fine.
