NEW SITE DESIGN

When I went APUG this morning, I was greeted with "0 new posts since your last visit". Normally it would be somewhere between 100 and 200.
I just figured that everyone suddenly decided to go digital.

Yup. No APUG from around 11.15am onwards. I have also noticed over the last few days a massive site slowdown when switching between pages. So much so that I was getting 'site timed out' messages in Firefox. Checked my computer for adware and malware but found nothing.

I'm also getting an error message when I try to upload photos:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: imagecreatefromjpeg() in /home/apug002/public_html/gallery/image-inc.php on line 84

Excuse from Sean for the troubles so far but there was a lot of CPU spikes and spam. He was busy very late this night when I had him on the MSN to fix all of his problems.

I like the general design of APUG quite a bit but there is something that bothers me.
The three places I visit daily and often more than once are:
forums, gallery, chatroom.
These unfortunately reside in the menu of Community and not in a tab which means that:
a) It slows me down and makes my browsing a bit more uncomfortable (which what user-friendliness is meant for an UI).
b) I have to have javascript on which is not by default as I use the NoScript extension of Mozilla Firefox.
Tabs like "Sponsors", "Subscribers", "Donate", etc are well placed in terms of general categories or in terms of propaganda (I mean as visual incentives) for people to use ("donate" and "subscribers" for example which are economically vital) but not convenient for regulars.
I would have liked maybe a second row of tabs with the most common links for "Community" and "Member Links" such as the three mentioned for the former and maybe the "Control Panel", "Last 24 hours Posts" and "Advanced Search" under the latter.

What do you think?

I plan to do some work on the menubar soon, but as far as java that is what the chatroom uses so not much I can do about that one..

Something similar has been happening to me off and on for months. It says there's new posts, but when I click on them I get nothing.

last night we had the outage which caused that. If you find your new posts vanish due to a timeout, check the "member links" on the main menu bar, you can then select many options to view new posts in the last x hours..

*some updates*

-menu bar has been updated to include more popular links
-log off action has been added to the "member links" menu to reclaim a little menu realestate
-search box in the header has been updated with a direct link to advanced search under it
-latest gallery photo has been moved to the top of the sidebar

I like that alot! Ultimately, despite all the mouthing off we do around here, it's all about the images.
