New ProShade 40676 for my Hasselblad V-System

Just arrived. Its the one with the fold-able bottom rail.

Question - are they really THAT flimsy? I thought the shade/harmonica would be supported by some rod attached to the bottom of the camera body. It seems as if it is only held by the bayonet of the lens. Seems quite unstable - can someone comment?

The bottom "rail" is slightly bent upwards, so from the side it does not look 100% straight.

And the bellows are a bit dusty/smelly - any magic tricks?

I’ve read criticism of the newer plastic shade since about 2009, on this forum. Yep… it’s a bit flimsy. There are 2 versions. The original has really stiff bellows, which makes it a bit of a pain if one wants to fully extend to its fullest. The revised “T” version is supposed to have less stuff bellows and a stronger brake to keep the shade fully extended. I have to e earlier version and can attest to its flaws. But it works okay so…

Did you get the masks, also? They really help, especially at full extension with a 250mm lens.

Lens shades are used to protect the end of your lens from damage. Make sure to use a lens shade in order to protect your expensive lens.

So it its not the plastic-plastic model, not the early one, but the early one with a collapsible rail. And the lens-to-shade part is basically held by 2 screws.

There is no problem with including relevant illustrative links to products displayed on the websites of well-known third-party vendors.

I have the same shade. I've never had any issues using it or noticed any instability once it's attached to the bayonet of the lens.

I haven't sniffed mine but haven't noticed any unpleasant smell coming from it

Same here. And, I've used it under some fairly windy conditions. Oh, and the bottom rail on mine is perfectly flat, once the rail is folded down and tightened. Sounds like yours may have gotten slightly bent at some point.

the trick to absorbing smells is to lock it together with an open tray partially filled with baking soda or vinegar into a drawer or large plastic bag for a week.

Update: on CF lenses, without the step up ring, the whole thing is a different story. I also noted that you can fasten the silver screw in the middle of the bottom rail, then the thing is tight like nothing else.

Tightening “silver screw” is the key to stability here. Yes, previous un-collapsible shade (from C series) was much more rigid.
Don’t remember have I ever seen B60 and B70 lens adapter for it?

I believe there may have been a B60 mount for the un-collapsable shade (40231) that would connect that shade to the outer bayonet. It was in an early-1980's (I recall) the 1985 catalog. Of course, looking through the catalogues I can't find what I'm talking about... but I have a strong recollection. Very hard accessory to find. I tried for a long time and ended up just buying a newer shade. The silver 63 adapter, though, screws into a B60-67 adapter, which can be atached to the inner filter bayonet.

They really are. I have 2 and rarely use it because of the bulk. The fixed plastic shades are a lot more convenient to use. I keep those attahced to my lenses in the camera bag. The Pro Shade are in a box in a closet and only see use for "studio work".
