Hi all--
Not really sure what category this should go in, hopefully this will work out. Anyway, I am starting a small film/paper/chemistry retail spot here in San Francisco, CA. Once I am more fully up and running I will post a link to a working website and all of that--but anyone that lives in the Bay Area should come in and say hi! The name of the business is Glass Key Photo. I will be an APUG sponsor soon--it's in the early stages of life right now. If you have any interest in following progress you can do so over on facebook (I know...)

I'm a one man operation hoping to help keep analog photography alive and well in my little corner of the world.

Thanks for reading!

Adios,
Matt

Greeting from Haight Street (in Cincinnati). Let us know when you are an APUG sponsor and your web site is up. I will try and send you some business.

PS I was just picking out an LP play on my turntable moments before I looked at the APUG web site. I like your location.

I read your shop is situated in a record shop next to turntables...

Yep, I've been running a turntable sales/repair business out of a record store for a few years now. I saw more and more people coming in with film cameras (makes perfect sense to me) and I know tons of analog photographers so I figured, what the heck. You only live once and I love film more than most other things in life...so there you have it!

Best of luck to you. You'll be getting as much of my business as I can send your way (I don't live in the Haight anymore, alas). An idea: maybe offer pickup/delivery for Photoworks processing? It will save your camera-toting buddies a trip over to Market street and give them another excuse to come to your store.

What fiber paper are people printing with the most these days? I'm planning on carrying Ilford, but what else are you liking? Adox? Oriental? Others?

I'll also be interested in 620 film.

Even with the relative scarcity of "bricks and mortar" outlet for film, it can be tough to compete. So many of us have gotten used to buying online and in quantity. Focusing on the forgotten niches can certainly help.

Hi Matt, I just want to wish you the best of luck in your new venture, I'm far too far away to be a customer but I hope you have every success, I've never been to the U.S, but one of my sons was studying at U.C Berkeley a few years ago, that I believe in your neck of the woods.

I want a cool tone graded fiber paper, or @ least a neutral / cool base white w/ a warm tone that can be toned to cool. Is there any such available?

Thanks for the kind words! Progress is happening. I kind of want to start a webcam of people's faces/reactions to seeing a big ol' fridge full of film inside a record store. It's truly fascinating. The response in person has been really good--except for one guy that asked something like "Why would you even bother to stock film when there is digital?" Of course someone else in the store jumped in to ask him why he bothered to buy records when there are cds--I didn't have to say anything!

I'm not sure if something like that is available. Unfortunately dollars and cents being what they are, I doubt I will be able to stock graded fiber paper for some time (though I want to at some point!)

I would love to be able to buy 620 so I can be done with re-spooling from 120. Internet sales will be the salvation of niche market items. If you can build sales volume up maybe you can find a supplier for 116, 118, and 122 also. China, perhaps?
