Only $5000 for the lens with serial number 1 and an LCA wide camera and a trip to Vienna. I'll take two.... When I win the lottery.

Don't know what to think about this one.

My Nikkor-S 58/1.4, wide open, has bokeh as beautiful (or even better) than the pictures in the example, is far easier to use, more compact, and I can bet that at f8 it kicks the Petzval lens in the sharpness and resolution department.

"Defocus control" lenses have existed for years, i wonder what's so revolutionary on the lens.

Regarding the 85mm lens, the Canon EF 85/1.8 is a far better buy. An optically perfect lens with beautiful bokeh.

Oh well, at least Lomo helps film stay alive.

It looks okay at Swirl Factor 1, but, so what? Any of the longer f1.8+ primes do as well, and have all the benefits of AF, metering, flash etc.

For me this project is a way to go to get cheaper 85/1.8 lens. I want petzval 85mm, not this new one 58, but I hope this new lens will lower the prices of second hand 85 petzvals.

I am 99% sure that Helios 58mm was developing start for the project. Some small changes, nicer outfit, and voilà: 50€ transformed to 500€. This is the way to do business . Iphone way of business.

You can't, there is only lens made with serial number 1. See what I did there, just saved you $5000, feel free to send me $2500 :D

I just had a read at what the trip entails, 5 days in Vienna, a day trip to Slovakia, a tour and photoshoot the lens and a camera for $1750, that's not bad actually.

I'm glad to see them capitalize on their success. Their pushing the boundary on a true classic Petzval..the designer had to deviate in some respect to get to f/1.9 and maintain any kind of image sharpness. The layout looks like a traditional Petzval, so it's probably by optimizing the glass types and living with the subsequent loss of resolution (fast Petzval designs drive the first half of the rear field doublet and the aperture forward into the objective group to maintain sharpness). That's what the MTF and cutaway CAD model show me.

Recreating Petzval swirl in non-Petzval designs is not difficult (from a design standpoint) to intentionally do so by manipulating field curvature.
