I picked up a "new" Pentax K1000 with a 50mm F/2 lens Friday evening at the Unclaimed Baggage store in Scottsboro, Alabama. I shot a roll through it just to get used to it and to make sure the mechanics worked properly. Overall, I'm impressed so far.

I used a handheld meter as my light meter, even though the meter in the camera worked. The negatives look properly exposed, so I'm certain that the shutter works as it should. the lens is also very clean. There was one thumbprint on it, caused by the worker carelessly putting the camera in a brown paper bag and stapling the reciept to the top of the bag (Why he didnt just hand me the camera and a reciept, I dont know :/). Luckily I had a bottle of lens cleaner and some wipes, which seem to have solved the thumbprint problem

Also, the body is very nice. there is a bit of wear on it, but I'm not sure how old it is. Is there a way to use the serial number or something to see when it was manufactured?

Oh, and if someone has a spare lens cap for a Pentax 50mm f/2 lens laying around, I'd be happy to take it off your hands for a few dollars or a couple of rolls of FP4+

You can buy 49mm lens caps from Dealextreme.com very cheaply. It's what I used for my Pentaxen. They don't say Pentax on them, of course.

I'm glad to hear about your "new" K1000. If you have a camera shop near where you live, you can pick up a lens cap real cheap.

I'll check that out. I'm also checking out that online auction site. I dont care if it says Pentax on the cap, as long as it keeps fingerprints off. Besides, Pentax is written on the body. :D

My new toy is a welcome addition to my camera bag. I believe having a small camera with a 50mm f/2 lens will be a good compliment to my Canon and it's heavy, white zoom lenses :D

I'm going to have to pick up some more film in a few days. There's a renaisance festival in Florence, Alabama on the 24th and 25th, and I'm not gonna miss an opportunity to take pictures of those guys (and girls). If I dont find a cap on that auction site, I'll see if the local camera store has a few laying around

BTW you might get two of them. They can be easily lost.

Jeff

Yeah. I've lost a few of my Canon caps over the years. Tis a quite annoying experince for me. I'm considering taking some kind of string and attaching the cap to the lens barrel, but having that thing dangling arond my fingers when I'm zooming or focusing might annoy me more than buying a new cap every 9 months :/

I shouldnt hav too much trouble finding caps for it (or my Canon for that matter. I think it's about time for my Canon lenscap to go missing again :/ )

I notice in your location Alabama, The buttcrack of America. I was born and raised in New Jersey and I'm always getting teased about that being the buttcrack of America!:D

I guess it's subjective

I think it's a decent place most of the time. I live out in a rural area, so there's not a lot of stuff to do unless I drive to Huntsville or Florence or Birmingham (and usually florence and B-ham are too far of a drive for me). there's a lot of places to take landscape/nature pictures, which is nice when there's nothing to do  (I guess I'm more of a "city person" )

Well, I have another "new" Pentax K1000. A guy I know from church saw me walking around with my first Pentax and offered to let me have his since he said it's been in the closet for years. He gave it to me after church today, for free! He said he's happy to get it out of his closet and give it someone that will use it. He gave me his whole camera bag, which included the K1000, a 50mm F/2 lens, a 135mm F/2.5 lens, and a flash unit.

I shot a roll in it and used the 135mm lens. I still havent tested the 50mm lens. I'm going to take the roll of film (Fuji Superia 400) and get it developed tomorrow and possibly shoot a roll with the 50mm lens. I want to make sure the lenses work and the meter and shutter are working fine

If the 50mm lens works fine, I might post it up on the classifieds. I dont really see a need to have two 50mm lenses
