I just purchased a used Pentax 645n, and it is behaving a bit strangely, but it could just be that I'm not familiar with the camera yet. The issue is that it seems to do only one thing... when I press the shutter button, the shutter locks open, and the only way to reset the shutter and mirror is to take the batteries out of the camera. It does this no matter what shutter setting I'm on. When I reinsert the batteries, the camera winds to the next frame and the shutter resets. The LCD reads as it should--displays the ISO and frame count.

I changed the film. When I press the shutter, it does not wind to the first frame, rather just does what I described above. Has anyone had a problem like this? Do I just have a setting wrong. I've read the entire manual and can't seem to find my error.

Any help you guys can give me is much appreciated! Thanks.

Camera is defective. I have the 645N II and it does not behave that way at all.

It sounds as if it is defective. I would try some new lithium batteries but if that doesn't cure the problem hopefully you can return it.

Eric Hendrickson may be able to repair it but I understand he is low on parts for the 645n.

I have a P645N and mine does not behave this way and neither can I think of what a user can accidentally do to make it behave this way.

If batteries are low then there ought to be a sign in the LCD indicating this. I fear that there is a defect in the camera but you might want to post your problem on Pentaxforums in the medium format section in case we have all overlooked some obvious cause and I'd contact the seller quickly as well to tell him of your concerns.

I wouldn't leave it for days or even weeks before making contact and leave yourself open to the accusation that it must be something you have done wrong after you had used the camera for weeks

Best of luck

I have a Pentax 645N. I' experienced weird shutter and winding behaviour due to low power batteries.

The camera DID NOT give low battery warning, thus I didn't even consider this. But it was the problem.

Try new batteries. good fresh alkaline or lithium batteries.
