The new monthly shooting assignment for July/Aug 07 is Leisure Activities. The things we do on our off times to relax. Ideas could include fishing, chess, gardening, painting or even photography; A remote release would be handy. Extra points for any story to go with the picture.

A bump and call for entries from those that haven't participated. This is a pretty wide open assignment and should be easy to fulfill. Join us!:D

Wayne,

Did John Bartley agree to this? He's the conductor for the MSA. I'll wait to hear but will assume original assignment is on until John indicates otherwise.

I checked with him first and he agreed. The first assignment was a little too involved, but extra points will be given in this one for text, but it is not a requirement. Overall it is much the same Summer type of assignment, just from a different perspective to make it easier to figure out a picture. I originally thought the first assignment might inspire some journalistic tendencies but since it is the end of the month and nothing has really happened by now so I thought to make it as easier assignment which John agreed with.

As Wayne has posted, I did agree with him that a change might bring some participation during these dog days of summer.

I think summer is a time of being busy for most of us and so I'm going to break out the Polaroid 55 and waste a few frames.

I think I'm allowed out now that my sweethearts bathroom renovation is almost done (I carpent ... she paints  )

This is a pretty wide open assignment and should be easy to fulfill. Join us!

Yup - please join us - this is a very wide open assignment and for those budding and closet journalists among us, there are extra points for a good story

cheers

Well, darn!

Yesterday I came across "the shot" for which I'd already composed a great caption!

Well, not too  but we were only half-way through the assignment period! When was the last time anyone turned in an assignment before deadline!

Slowly sulks off into corner and ponders whether to bother anymore....

I'm sure whatever your post was going to be, in no way would it eclipse Mrs Bartley's leisure activity for John!

Seriously post it. The whole process was at least a leisure activity for you!

Actually, the original assignment was a Summer activity or, as then modified, a current "seasonal" one giving some courtesy to our friends in the anitpodes. Yes, we all were taken aback by the "caption" requirement - but sometimes you just "suck it up and do it."

Leisure might be the popular choice for how to approach this assignment - and not necessarily different from what I shot - but it wasn't the main criterion. The criterion was a "seasonal" shot.

I just don't see why, only half way through the period, the assignment got changed.

Why bother having an assignment if it can be changed arbitrarily? I guess it's good that the assignment was changed when we were only half-way through the period - certainly better than the night before - that would have really meant a "fix" was in.

Anyway, as I said - why bother now?

These assignments are supposed to be for fun, right? I don't see any problem with changing the theme as long as it gives ample time.

So...here. Not one image, but it's better illustrated in three.

When did this happen? I'm waiting for my "Summer" pictures to be developed so I can submit and now they are not acceptable? Too late to go out shooting again. Bummer...

Your "summer" pictures are still fine Barbara Ann. They can be posted with or without text, and extra points are awarded for text. Wayne was concerned at the lack of photos submitted (none), so all he's done is widened the field of acceptable subjects. When he asked me about the change, I didn't really see any problem as the subjects "summer" and leisure activities" go very closely hand in hand. It is after all, just for fun, and is just a reason for posting something here for us to gab and gossip about.

If anyone should take the heat for the amended/expanded assignment subject, it should be me, as I am the one who ok'd the change.

Don't be shy folks, post away and show us anything at all about how you spend your summer leisure (or other) time.

cheers eh?

John,

I have two issues:

First, the original assignment was kind of a PJ one. Take a summery shot and add a caption. Now it is changed to showing "your summer leisure (or other) time" - so it is no longer a PJ assignment but a personal perspective.

Second, why with only one-half of the assignment period elapsed, was it assumed that there would be no submissions? Admittedly, two months is a rather long time for a "PJ-like" assignment but it is what it is.

I realize that we do this for fun - but when we play Monopoly we do that for fun too - and we don't expect the rules to change halfway through the game.

When I did the "horses" thing I realized after a short while that it was going to have a low submission rate. But it never occurred to me that I could just change the assignment. How is that fair to the few who were pursuing the original assignment?

Well, if I can get my darned slides developed before the end, I'll decide whether to submit. But I've kind of lost enthusiasm.

Thanks for the clarification, John. Now, I would like to include text with my submissions. Can I just put it in the description of my photo? I'm not sure how to do that "link" that Wayne mentioned. Thanks for your help!

Yahoo! I just got 2 new hammocks! My favorite year-round leisure activity! So if I can rouse myself from one, reach my camera without knocking over my margarita, and take a few shots, I may have an entry.

George,

Please allow me to apologise to yourself and anyone else who feels shortchanged. I could have and should have thought a bit longer before giving the ok. I will make note of this event and will be sure to reflect longer next time before making a decision. I certainly hope that you will post something for us for the current assignment. Your photos are always interesting and we'd miss you if you drop out.

I have a couple of my own to post this time (non-competing of course ) and should have them up this evening.

cheers eh?

I'm glad you're going to go ahead and post this round Barbara Ann . If you wish, go ahead and post your photo to the MSA gallery and include the text right there, or you can let me know by PM when the photo is posted and I'll make up the link for you to include in your text, which you can then post right here in this thread.

cheers eh?

PS : have you been thinking about what your assignment for us will be for September/October?

John don't take the heat on this one for me. It's my responsibility. I asked to change this for two reasons. The immediate feedback in the original thread when I asked if we should change the assignment and the lack of any entry whatsoever at the end of the month. Seriously, how do we know you hard at work or even interested if there is no feedback? I only went on the feedback I got and I adjusted to it by asking to change it.

I feel that the new assignment will garner more entries. I also feel that it is not that much different since I did quote in the original assignment "Summer vacation or anything related to this time of year. Is it hiking or biking, eating or reading, fishing or swimming or travel." But as it is, and since I have offended some with the change of course I will offer my sincere apologies. I was not looking to satisfy everyone with this change; just get more involved. As it is and as John has noted, please enter your work. Summer and leisure go hand in hand and at least your writing was hopefully a leisure activity for you.

respectfully, Wayne

Be considerate and help older photographers.

This is a picture of my friend Dick Deimel under the dark cloth and focusing his Wista 4x5 at the Dead Link Removed in North Miami, Fl. I met Dick about 3 years ago or so thru an ad he placed which asked to meet other photographers looking to get together and shoot. I answered and am glad I did as Dick is just a fine fellow to be out with and full of knowledge of the Miami area's, besides being very sociable, and was always willing to tell me stories about his days as a messenger in the Revolutionary War.

This particular day Dick and I were shooting at the Monastery on a Sunday morning, and as always the rains came in and we had to duck under the cover of the welcome center at the front of the property. I always like to help Dick if I can by placing arrows to help him know where to point his camera.

Is it OK if I put my "text" under my picture? I'm not computer savy enough to do the link thing you mentioned! Also, is it Ok if I enter 3 photos? Thanks...

Under rule #10 of the New Shooting Assignment guide, only ladies from New Jersey are eligible to enter text under a picture. Men need to be on top; Well sometimes.

In reference to quantities, anything up to your IQ is fine., although if it is different subject matter you may want to enter 3 times, but as far as supporting the story goes, anything goes afaik.

Actually at the top of the reply window there are some things to use for links etc. I actually forgot how to have a picture show in the thread; John??

Barbara,

The easiest way to make a link is when you are viewing your pic in The Gallery go up to the URL (website address) bar on your monitor and highlight it and right-click on your mouse and then click on "Copy".

Then start a post here in the thread. Right click again and then click "Paste"

Hit the Return key to start a new line and type in your caption.

I sounds harder to do than it is!

EDIT: you should see a line that in my signature block which links to My Gallery. I'm not "bright enough" to know how to relabel the URL line. Someone else here can probably teach you that trick!

Uh-oh ... Only one photo posted and I'm in trouble already ... I posted my text under the photo, but I ain't from Joisey, and I ain't no goil, and if I was I sure wouldn't want to be a lady (that'd be no fun) ... hopefully I'm not banned from entering again ...

I think this is it ...

1) go to your picture that you've uploaded into the MSA gallery
2) "right click" on the picture and then you should see something like "copy image location" - left click on that
3) when you make your post here, and when you're ready to insert your photo, click on the icon above the post writing window (second from the right) that looks like two pyramids
4) put your cursor in the entry bar, right click and then click on "paste" and the location of your photo will be displayed like this sample (there was a url link here which no longer exists) in the entry bar
5) click on "OK" and you should be set

Here's a try ::

Be_considerate.JPG

I hope this isn't too confusing

cheers all

Thanks for letting this (little) lady from New Jersey post my text under my photos. It took me years to figure out aperture, shutter speed and depth of field. I don't think I'll live long enough to figure out how to do that link!
