Indeed, a CLA'd late model of the first-gen M6 seems to be the "peak Leica" moment of their rangefinder series.

I might even toy with the idea to nix the R kit....but I wont.

And you shouldn't or you will end up like I did with two Visoflex' for the M and a box of accessories and adapters which transform the elegant M into a hunchback which is usable with macro or longer lenses but much more arkward than a proper SLR.

Still, I'm not a fan of the zinc topsheet era.....
At the same time I get the excitement of a new Leica, may we long have that opportunity available to us.

The M6, the plain, 1980s one, is "peak Leica" - because it is not a collectable item, not rare, not "curated", nothing. No urban legends, no brassing this and that.

Just a spot-on classic, so spot on that many people try to push it off its pedestal, which is just a confirmation of its status quo.

Yes it is a '68..... I've had a few over the years including a black M2....but to RL's point i've also had at least 3 M6 including a titanium.

You know RL, back in the day, black paint or titanium versions or the 50th anniversary cost a bit more..... (the ones with the 50th markings were $50 or so more). Not like today then black paint versions cost $20-40,000+...... they were cameras, albeit well respected, but not collector items to put in a glass case.

If someone is buying at current prices, they're likely a collector. I am sure there are lots of people who got them earlier, who are using them.

I've always gravitated towards chrome. Not that I ever had a shot at black paint M4 etc. I have a new black paint MP lovely camera. I bought from a British dealer brand new, priced in £ when the USD was in a very favorable position vs Sterling. Today I suspect it would be unobtainable. I have purchased some nice cameras from MAP Camera in Japan. This too has become very difficult of late.

There's no need to trim the leader when loading film in an M2 (or an M3).

I'd argue same is true for the Barnacks. It certainly can be done reliably without the trim. Business card trick works.

The only thing about that trick is that you probably should use a slick card rather than the usual cardboard because you don't want dust infesting your camera, but it's a good tip. Thanks for that.

That's great to hear. I have a black M6ttl with the 0.85 viewfinder. I love that camera! Rangefinder cameras are my favorite. Leicas are cheap to shoot, film wise. I bought a box of junk at a thrift store, had a Leica II made in 1932. I figured it would make a great display piece. Who ever had it before must have serviced it. I put an old Nikkor screw mount lens on it, works fine. 93 years old.

If you want a modern rangefinder, from 1990s and not 1950s, one that can be serviced by many experienced factory or independent technicians, that can be easily replaced because so many were made, that can easily be found pre-owned, that is most likely to return its purchase price when selling later (if at all)...

...then the Leica M series are the most obvious choice. Sure, there might be some niche and leftfield alternatives.

Today my new M6 arrived. In black, in very good condition. A dry run gave all the correct results. Now I am taking it on a 4 day trip for a road test.

This could be the foundation of my two camera./ three lens setup.
