For anyone who hasn't ever bothered to visit it in its old form, the LF Forum has a new look (same software as apug now) and is up and running well (lots of chatter about the new software right now)

http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/index.php

Very useful as it has years of old info archived. As well, it is linked to probably the best online LF resources - answers many for our recurring questions and some for questions you haven't even thought of yet:

...so long as it involves a big camera, or at least a not too small one that can be bent into funny shapes.

yes, the bigotry across there is reserved for those who use funny little toy cameras like Hasselblads and such

I like it enough that I post with my full name. I have not seen too many heated discussions, other than the relevant merit of some photographers works. There was a good Burtynsky and Gursky thread not long ago, though maybe a little like "What Is Art?" sort of thread. Mostly very civilized.

Ciao!

While a big fan of and long-time member of that forum, I must take issue with the thread title. There's nothing improved about the LF forum. Its software was simply changed from a clean, straighforward customized design to the same commercial product used here. Not reason to decrease my opinion of the forum's value, but certainly no cause for seeing it as "improved."

Oh lah di dah...!

Well - for one it has a wanted and for sale section (before there were no commercial posts allowed). It's also much easier to post images in a thread.

Two simple improvements for starters.

(as a well as an off topic lounge to keep the neo-cons in)

I consider that a degradation, not an improvement.

So now more heated discussion will appear concerning aesthetic matters about which there can be no right or wrong. Neutral at best, certainly not an improvement.

Sounds like LF forum is trying to emulate what APUG is.

Yes, and in addition, trolling and personal attacks have started already.

I don't think so Aggie. They just replaced their old software with the same commercial product Sean uses here. That and a new server mean more "features" are available for use/misuse.

I am having trouble signing up, my original password does not work,

When signing in for the first time, use ******(I`ll send you the password in a PM) as the password, then you can go to the User CP and change it to your original one.

The administrator sent an email to the registered address of each account with a generic password. That is needed to log-in, then you can change the password to something more to your liking... like what you had before the change in software.

I don't call trolling tolerance a forum improvement...

actually, it always looked like APUG was trying to emulate the venerable LF forum (which btw, has always tended to have much less animosity than on here)

there are those that prefer and iron fist running their forums and those who are quite happy with a velvet glove.

There has never been a shortage of vigorous but generally well mannered debate on aesthetics on the LF - I don't see that this will change that.

Same for a FS section - not quite sure why it would be negative. It's a much more logical solution than trying to police a "no commercial posts" rule. In addition it will no doubt turn out an excellent spot to find good LF gear....

If you can't find the email to your regiostered address, try
emailing Tom Westbrook (who's email I can't find on this machine right now or just lfgroup at largeformatphotography dot info - which goes to the moderators)

what's also encouraging is the changes have also encouraged a number of new LF photographers to sign up to the list

Yeah... it's strange. I was a lurker there for quite a while. For some reason, when I saw the format change, I decided to sign up. Can't put my finger on what it is, though.

Strange.

I find it difficult to call the chages improvements too. While there has been one great improvement in the ability to filter out d****** topics, the forum's overall ease of use has been vastly "deproved" in favor of bells and whistles.

This is a serious question.... what does it mean when you say someone is "trolling" on a forum.
