I understand. But delicate in what way? Did the emulsion lift?

All right. I guess any paper would suffer under such circumstances.

I really don't mean to sound elitist here, but I sincerely hope the new products will not be limited to such pedestrian nonsense.

Brace yourself ...

If I would run a film based company I would market new products that appeal to the growing group of film beginners. Best case scenario? Perhaps existing emulsions in a different format? And the MG V papers of course.

Appealing to complete novice and/or young photographers is all well and good, but that needn't involve shutting out everyone else in the process.

That is absolutely true, but resources are limited. Have a look a Mirko's presentation where he talks about film costs in relation to R&D.

If production of photographic materials available today magically becomes available forever, I would be happy. Therefore, by extension anything that made fulfillment of this scenario possible would likewise make me happy. Even if all new products cater towards beginning photographers.

Of course, I would be happier if things I want became available again.

Since this announcement came thru Twitter originally (I believe) then I do not expect much from this new introduction that will get some of us more experienced photographers too excited.

Unless of course you get excited with the idea that young, new practitioners are attracted to film with new products aimed at them.

I do hope however that Harman doesn't spend too much money and resources chasing the younger crowd that they begin to get into the same types of financial trouble that Kodak experienced. What appears to have made Harman a stable film company in the first place is not forgetting their base and ensuring that their products maintained a level of quality that could be relied on.

What would be a new product specifically aimed at beginners? Ilford introduced those development kits awhile back that might qualify.

Yes, I could probably find an example. A few years ago I was making lith prints with a very dilute developer and a tray warmer, so once toning and washing etc. were included, the time the paper spent 'wet' was / is considerable.
I use hardening fix and a hardener after toning. It's worth the effort as Foma produces lovely paper.
Now back to Ilford to stay on the subject, I use a Pako drum dryer and I've adopted the hardener fix and post toner hardening, especially helps with the Art 300 material to keep from sticking to the belt (I'm not ferrotyping)

I'm very interested in what Ilford will have to show. Not much longer to wait

Kodak heavily used social media to announce TMax 3200. I don’t think the fact that Harman is using Twitter tells us much about the nature of the upcoming release. How else do you promote film in the 21st Century?

I was browsing around and turns out there was and announcement for a reloadable "disposable" Kentmere camera just a couple days ago.

This is great. It was profits from Instamatic that allowed for affordable professional products. Get people shooting black and white and maybe we will have labs which would encourage more black and white film sales which would encourage more labs.......................

About the single (well, reloadable) use camera. I am taking grad studies and was surprised that two younger bachelor classmates mentioned carrying a disposable camera. Likewise, been surprised to see many film cameras used around for fun.
There is a significant user base not present here and that communicated in social media. I personally don't like it for posting work, but it has been very useful to keep contact, interact with the community and to get some information.

It seems to me that the younger generation is in love with film, from disposable to high end. There are dozens of young YouTubers reviewing gear (with sometimes humorous errors in terminology!), and the attendees at our annual Photo Historical Society of New England show have swung decidedly younger and hipper in the past few years. I have a couple of young interns each semester, and although they take pictures with their phones, they marvel at the quality of my Nikon digital images and will go and follow me around at lunchtime if I go walkabout with my Hasselblad, Rollei, or Leicas. The kids are not only our future, but also are a'right. Make way fellow geezers.

It would be hard to say any serious photographer is being shut out by Ilford. They offer a more extensive range of black and white products than anyone else, as far as I can tell. As long as they're not discontinuing production of their current offerings I welcome whatever they want to add to the list. If that new item is geared toward beginners I have no objection to that.

imo, what would get more youngsters into film would be daylight processing. A new changing bag + developing tank is cheaper than what a Rondinax can go for. It can't just be the older folks paying a premium for them.

I think I saw in some video on YouTube somewhere somebody from Ilford said that all those kids going crazy with the Instax cameras was doing nothing but helping keep film alive, and all the old schoolers should be happy because that helps raise awareness, and also helps fund keeping some of the less popular stocks around.

Changing bags and developing tanks exist and are available.
For those who have no chance of darkening their place and are deterred by a changing bag Jobo could bring back their latest model of daylightloading tank.

The problem today is the sheer amount of information, often dubieus. Young people get the idea they would need a lot of specialized items.
I began bulkloading practically from the start. And then I did not even know of the existence of changing bags or loaders. Not even had any textbook or manual. All went fine at first attempt. And I assume many here got started the same way.

I only meant shut out of whatever these new products are (if they are indeed geared towards novices).

Changing bag or box would be cool. Tooling for a fancy tank would be big bucks.

I agree wholeheartedly!

I look forward to the day when the demand rises to the level where new film cameras might have a shot with the millennial market (I think young people are keeping the 4x5 market alive, almost singlehandedly). But for now, I'm just glad they're supporting film suppliers. Search YouTube for instructional videos on view / field camera shooting and you'll scarcely find a user old enough to run for POTUS.
