I've always wondered who makes this stuff for them? Did these films start out as mistakes? Like red bird, just being loaded up backwards by a sleepy technician perhaps? Or was lomo purple and this turquoise just having messed up color balance at the emulsion level when they were making it? Or are they buying up huge expired rolls of film, testing it and the making a product package that fits the expired film's characteristics?

I don't think asking them is going to work, as even if it were mistakes (and I admit, that is an intriguing idea) they would never in a million years admit it.

I would never buy this film - but I think it is a good business plan to produce new products that are different from existing ones and to try to create trends on the market. Here on APUG they will not find many followers, but I would not be surprised if they survive longer than both Kodak companies.

Interestingly enough, after a little photoshop sleuthing, it seems pretty simple. If you take a turquoise image, invert colors and then invert the L channel, you have a somewhat more normal colored image. It seems to be missing the magenta dye layer. It is similar with the Purple chrome stuff. If you replace the purple with green (yellow actually because you're altering the blue channel) you get a more normal colored image. I think they're just dinking around with the dyes to see what they can come up with that looks 'lomo'.

From the look of some of the pictures it's probably made in the black forest by dwarfs

But that's a digital process and you know, you can't talk about that here.

I am a fan of their Lomochrome Purple and shoot it when I can. I have some of this new film ordered as well.

I like to shoot both sides of the Purple so I'm going to try that with the Turquoise as well.

And I am a fan, because they are helping keep film alive and available. So it's a win.

I've ordered a few rolls, just because anything that keeps people shooting film is a good thing.

I've also shot a few rolls of LomoChrome Purple, but haven't really liked it much. Instead of the bright purple photos on their site, I have ended up with muddy uninteresting colors. Maybe it's my fault, but how do you scan (or print) an image when you don't know what the image is supposed to look like.

I had a roll processed and printed at my local Walgreen's and a few came out OK, but I don't know how the image was digitally manipulated by the automated equipment. When I have done that thing we don't talk about on APUG, I don't have a clue which settings to use. I end up using photoshop to manipulate the colors, but that seems to defeat the whole purpose of the film. At some point, I need to find a lab that optically prints to see how the film works (or move an enlarger to the top of my wish list).

The turquoise ordering page says only 5,000 rolls available each of 35mm and 120. So they were able to find a factory that can economically manufacture a batch as small as 10,000 square feet?

I would assume that the 5,000 rolls is a packaged test batch that would be normally for internal testing and whatnot?? With a large order placed, I would assume a limited initial run would be included??

I wonder if AgX could put forth an educated guess as to who is making these films for Lomography? He seems very knowledgeable with all things related to film manufacturing in Europe, both past and present. Agfa, maybe?

It is very likely that both films (Lomo Purple and this one) are made in Germany by InovisCoat / InovisProject. The pictures indicate that, and currently InovisCoat is probably the only company in Europe with a running colour film production (Film Ferrania has not started yet; and Agfa Aviphot colour films are most probably from former production runs).
InovisCoat is also the manufacturer of the negative film base for the Impossible films (that is official). They are also involved in the R&D of the Impossible films.
Here is a video about their production (first part of the film):

The employees there are former engineers from the German Agfa plant in Leverkusen. The machinery is also mostly from the Leverkusen plant, downsized and modernised.

Best regards,
Henning

I would be delighted. :D

All of my stuff in that regard is on Lomography, I hope linking to my albums there for assorted things is ok. I will also try to bring some results here. For those interested. I assume the Turquoise film will also work nicely at ISOs of 200/50 (f/b).

Ok, here's a color filter test I did on LCP using an assortment of filters over and under exposed as well as normally exposed.

And the EBS results I got using 200 normal side and 25-50 backside on the LCP.

Nice experimenting with film and filters. I think you had fun that day?
Most results don't convince me (sorry) to start using this film this way, but I liked this one:
http://www.lomography.com/homes/ali...er-test-everything-08-05-2014/photos/19874956
It has a nice monochrome effect (said I who mostly does B&W photography). I don't think I'll go this way but it did give me some new ideas for experimenting with filters. You can always learn something on APUG!
So thank you for sharing!

Just goes to show me that people will buy anything.

PE

If you think this is extreme - look at this:

http://shop.lomography.com/de/films/35mm-film?brands=501

... picture will show coloured lines ...
...effect shows a bubble-like structure on your image...
...you'll get bright green dots in different shapes and sizes all over the picture...
...turn out reddish or blueish green...

What is important? That it is fun to use it , quality and final result are secondary. Totally different approach to films than most of us here .

I think this is an interesting idea although not one I particularly feel like experimenting with at the moment. The purple film was marketed originally as infrared, emulating Aerochrome and EIR but when pushed they said it wasn't at all IR sensitive and they had just messed with the dyes and colour layers in the emulsion.

I think they are on safer ground here. They have just produced a special effects film which inverts certain colours. I like that they are offering something like this, which might be possible digitally but is is more fun with film. I think it is also interesting they are willing to actually commission this type of R&D and production. They are putting their money where their mouth is.

We keep talking about niche markets and this is exactly that, a niche product made in a small production run. We should also remember that Investicoat work closely with Adox and others involved in the traditional film market. If we want them to continue to exist we should support production of any wild and wacky products going, even if is isn't our cup of tea.
