Hi,

i have a question regarding lens.

The most of the people want to use old lens on new camera. My question is regarding the exact opposite.

The use of a new EF lens on a old EOS camera.

I have an old EOS camera, that use EF standard lens, I have only the body.

If I will use my EF 50mm STM 1.8 lens, that is from 2015, and is optimized for digital, there is some controindication on the use on film camera like my old EOS camera?

There is some difference between a EF 50mm 1.8 STM and a 50mm 1.8 born in 1988 (in the full of the film era?)

Thanks very much

I think you will find that most, if not all newer lenses from most makers will work on older cameras. The reverse may not be quite so true, with updates with newer products being incorporated so the item will work with older camera bodies.

For Nikon it's the other way. It's possible to use the oldest Nikon F mount on a brand new Nikon Df but Nikon G lenses and E lenses can not be used on older cameras like the F3, FM3a etc... In fact Nikon new E lenses can not be used on any film cameras including the F6 and a good number of older DSLR's like the D2 series.

With Canon you need to use EF lenses on EOS film cameras, EOS EF-S lenses don't cover 35mm or EOS full frame Digital sensors. Third party lense s acn be similar so you need to check the specific model.

My 40mm f/2.8 EF STM lens works very well on my Canon EOS film bodies. The "focus by wire" approach that STM lens use does, however, take a little getting use to - especially when you forget that even manual focusing doesn't work unless the meter is turned on.

All versions of Canon's 50mm 1.8 are EF lenses therefore full frame, EF-S lenses are APS-C and will not cover a full 35mm frame. I also believe the mount may be slightly different. Your 50mm 1.8 will fit on any Canon EOS camera.

All EF lenses will work on any EOS body, either film or digital (but not on an APS-C format body).

EF-S lenses are for APS-C format bodies.

So, for example, you can use a new Canon EF 50/1.8 with an old EOS 620, 500N, etc.

You need to avoid the EF-M mount lenses as well.
