New APX 400 and Xtol?

If I am using grain as an "artistic effect" then Rodinal 1:25 is good, but APX 400 is super grainy and Rodinal is grainy... so you get a lot of grain. HC-110 is a good combo too. -Grant

I guess my opinion is sort of misleading, and I should have pointed this out.... the only time I have seriously used APX400 is when I was printing 11x14 from a 35mm neg developed in Rodinal 1:50... the results I got were not bad. But it was grainier than say HP5+. I have only enlarged my APX400 negs souped in HC-110 to about 6x9 size... and those were less grainy than those that were souped in Rodinal. I have never tried APX400 in 120 size, I suppose I should try that some time. -Grant

The new apx 400 is a step back for AGFA. Grain like hell, tonality is fine, but don't push it!

I guess Xtol would do a fine job, results in Rodinal were very grainy and they looked like my gramp pictures from the late 30s (with 35mm)

Calbe makes and markets R09 (an earlier version of Rodinal)

In a magazine test of developers, the author said that prints from Rodinal and HC110 were very, very similar. I'd have to do some digging to find the article. Of course, this would only be relevant for conditions similar to those used in the test.

Xtol 1:1

I clip tested a roll in Xtol 1:1 at 68F, 10.5 minutes, 30 sec initial agitation and 10 sec (3 inversions) thereafter in a Jobo hand tank. Grain excellent, and negs with slightly heightned contrast but beautiful. Lens was a Rollei 80mm Planar. The rest of the roll was processed in a SS tank, (larger spacing between the reel) same regiment and the contrast was lower with grain the same. The clip test reminded me alot of the first time I developed 4x5 FP4+ in Xtol 1:3. Just absolutely beautiful negs. I'll be continuing further test, with increased agitation or dev times, including printing once I'm dark again. This looks to be my Fp4+ replacement in a 400 speed film.
