Hello,
Big surprise today when visiting the Fotoimpex forum, Mirko announces a new Adox Product !
The infos are in german and I'cant understand this language, i've just understood the film is an hig definition one, with a range 6-40asa , with a Cubiccrystal Monodispersed Single Layer . It looks like a very high definition film
See this links for more :

I'm allways very happy to see new products in argentic world and will appreciate more informations about this new film .

It's certainly very interesting. J&C has picked up some Adox products in the past, so maybe they will carry this one.

I'm not surprised that the ad copy on the website is all about grain and resolution. They probably know their market very well. But I hope that further development and testing will show that the emulsion is excellent in pictorial terms too, not just in resolution (which is a much-abused term anyway).

Here's a quick and dirty translation of the adox page:

This film is still under development.

We'll tell you as much as this for now:

  • No other film resolves more lines
  • No other film has less grain
  • No other film is sharper
  • Enlarge up to 1.5 by 2 meters without visible grain from a 35mm slide
  • Can be exposed up to 40 ASA (best shades at 16 ASA)
  • Develop in common developers down to 6 ASA or in ADOTECH CMS special developer for optimum results up to 25 ASA or push development up to 40 ASA.
  • Absolutely transparent film for finest grain slides with best performing projection.
  • AHU Anti Halation Layer below the emulsion for highest sharpness.
  • Perfect flatness after development on an undestroyable PET layer.

Let me grab some keywords from the rest of the text:

Cubiccrystal Monodispersed Single Layer, round silver grain in only one size and one layer. The smallest grain that can be produced, thus making this film the sharpest, highest resolution film of the world [sic!]. Also one of the most contrasty film (high gradation) and of course low sensibilty. Needs a special developer. Looses shadow detail at 16 ASA and up. Up to 40 ASA possible to use, though.

Needs their ADOTECH CMS Spezial developer, a one-shot developer, in 1:10 dilution.

The link at the bottom of the page goes to http://www.adoxfilm.de/html/cms_scans.html and shows some example pictures.

I'm not related to these folks in any way, I just translated a bit here for anybody interested.

Adox is a trademark that exists already for many, many years.

Herewith an old box of bromide paper, i guess some 30-40years old;

At first blush this film looks like a viable replacement for Technical Pan. However, they keep talking about slides in this little blurb. Is this a reversal film or a negative film?

It`s mentioned before (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Hm... just double-checked the text again. They say "für Feinstkörnigste Dias mit höchstem Projektionsvermögen". There's no way you could translate "Dia" other than slide, this term can't be used related to negative film.

A few paragraphs below, however, they mention that the film's negative will not be as black as with regular films and can be enlarged to paper of normal grade.

Seems they are more busy working on the film than on their press releases

I'm sure it's a negative film. Don't think they would (could?) develop a new b&w slide film.

Well, every b/w negative film can be developed as slide.

Most of them aren't the ideal choice for this because of their grey base material.

The new Adox will have a clear base (at least thats what Mirko told) and therefore will be better for reversal (slide) processing than most other b/w-films.

Looks a lot like rebranded microfilm.

CMS Film

As far as the usability of the CMS film as a slide film is concerned there are two factors in favour of this and one is questionable at this time of testing.

What basically makes any b/w usable as a slide film is the clearness of the base and the effectiveness of the antihalation layer.
Practically any b/w film can be reversal processed just if you end up with a blueish base (or a clear base but uneffective antihalation layer) your projected images might be dissatisfying.

These two criterias are met with our new film in an excellent way thus we suggest it for this alternative use as well. It comes on a perfectly clear base and it has a superb antihalation layer which is actually located between the emulsion and the base material, thus eliminating any halation effects caused by the base material itself.

If reversal developed this film will show brilliant slides with no visable grain up to over 2,5 meters projection diameter.

Especially if intended for projection, results of CMS, reversal processed to a slide, should be superb.

However since it is based on a microfilm technology we have not yet been able to make enough tests about gradation control if used together with a reversal process.

First results with the Foma slide processing kit are promising but we have not determined yet at which speed it can be actually shot if used for reversal process.
This is the third factor, the questionable one.
We plan to intensify our test on this in the first quarter of 2006.

Until then we are busy with the production and the final tests on this material in regular use as a negative film.

Thanks for posting some first-hand information! Sounds promising. Hope everything works out fine and we will be able to test the film in 2006.

Looking forward to see more of this film... and welcome to APUG, Mirko!

It's really cool that we have Mirko, jandc and Simon from Ilford here these days.
This is really the place to be regarding analogue photography.

Hey Mirko, welcome to APUG. Good to see you around here.

Bump! I just saw a Spanish site selling ADOX CMS with its special developer:

https://www.foto-r3.com/node/342

4.79 Euros a roll seems a decent price. Anybody can confirm the product's availability, at least in Europe?

That's certainly very true!

Welcome Mirko, another example of the quality of people associated with this passion of ours, as far as I can tell. The market may be shrinking, but we are certainly treated very well by those who are sticking around. Great news indeed.

Peter.
