Neofin blue

Just been given a pack of this, really nice with Pan-F, but was wondering what the make-up is of this developer. I have heard somewhere that it may be Beutler, anyone have a clue?

Beutler's is NOT Neofin Blue. The Photographer Formulary are wrong.

Commercial developers are seldom exactly the same as the published formulas, but Neofin Bleu is reported in several places to be similar to the Beutler formula. Certainly the recommended timing seem to be the same. The next question is which Beutler formula? Beutler developed several fairly similar formulas for high acutance development (as well as formulas for other things). Two of the most familiar are his 105 developer and his high acutance developer.

Beutler's High-Definition Developer #105
Solution A
Water (52C) 750 ml
Metol 10 g
Sodium sulfite, anh. 50 g
WTM 1 l
Solution B
Water (52C) 750 ml
Sodium carbonate, mono. 50 g
WTM 1 l
Mix 1 part A, 1 part B, and 10 parts water.
Develop for approximately 7 to 10 minutes at 20C

Beutler High Acutance Developer
Metol 1 g
Sodium sulfite 5 g
Potassium iodide 2.5 mg
Sodium carbonate 5.85 g
Water 1 l

Neofin Blue is a much more sophisticated developer which uses Metol, Phenidone and Hydroquinone which shows in the MSDS. The Tetenal formula has never been made public as far as I am aware.

Tony, you can order Tetenal chemicals from Vanbar, but I wouldn't want to make any statements about what their stock levels might be. As I found out when trying to get a bottle of Rodinal/R09/Adonal their web site says in stock but in their shop (Carlton, Vic) they said come back in two months.

What you describe sounds a lot like Pyrocat-HD with hydroquinone instead of catechol. If that were the case, the negatives would be a definite shade of brown from hydroquinone staining.

Neofin Blue was never a staining developer nor was it the same as the Beutler formula, The formulation seems to have changed several times over its history. The exact formula was never published. There are many acutance developer formulas and they all produce similar results.
