The M605 I just bought has a dodgy bulb socket to the 2 pin EKG bulb (80w) so I want to replace it.

Home Depot had replacement sockets and I plan on cutting off the old bad socket and introducing the new socket by soldering the wires together, then put on heat shrink.

Is that a good plan ? I'm worried that the bulb chamber gets very hot. I want to make sure that soldering is the best approach ?

Thanks,Ron

Soldering them will be fine. The enclosure does get hot, but not hot enough to melt solder (at least it shouldn't get that hot, if it does, you have more to worry about than melting solder).

Agree that soldering will be just fine, followed by your heat shrink.

Glad to know Home Depot has the sockets - I've got an enlarger that uses the EKG. It is a very short-lived bulb. I got a couple of spares for around $7.00 each the last time I had to replace mine (last week). They are still plentiful on Amazon and eBay.

Thanks for the endorsements and the link !

Re the EKG bulb. I use this too on a Vivitar V1. Doc here http://www.prisma-scene.com/Ampoules/GE/Ge-projection.pdf advises that the ENW/ENC is a direct replacement for EKG but with longer life.

There is also a DDM bulb rated 50 hrs instead of 25. It's also a dichroic and appears identical in form to the EKGs - I have a couple of these I picked up as cheap spares. The EKG is available but as said does not have a very long life and is expensive.

The temp colour of all of them is quoted as 3200-3350 depending on where you read the specs.

EDIT - In fact this is a very useful resource for detailed bulb specs. http://www.donsbulbs.com/cgi-bin/r/b.pl/ddm-19v|19v|80w|gx5.3|mr16d~ansi.html
