Can anyone give me the depth of a recessed lensboard for a 4 X 4 (CC-400) style Calumet board?
I am going to make one, I just need to know the distance of the recess. How far back is the lens moved by using the recessed board, as opposed to, a flat board?
Thanks

If you're making your own why worry about the factory one? Build it to suit your needs.

Good Morning, Surly,

I don't have a recessed Calumet board at hand right now, but I think the recess is around one inch. As Nick has indicated above, you can have any dimension you want if you're making your own. The deeper the recess, however, the greater the difficulty in adjusting f-stops and shutter speeds, as well as potential problems in having the clearance for a cable release.

I use a 90mm WA on my Calumet with just a plain lensboard. Even with the bellows fairly tightly compressed, I have no problem with vertical rise/fall and a little tilting. Unless you're thinking of a 75mm or a 65mm or anticipate some fairly extensive movements, try the plain board first.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I suppose I did not need the dimension. I just thought someone could throw a tape on one and let me know what the distance is. I honestly didnt think to try it on a flat board. I'm certainly not worried about it, I just dont want to spend 40-60 bucks buying one. I'll play around with it but if someone has one please feel free to post. Thanks.

Which lens? Which camera? Normal bellows one? Or the long? Odds are somebody can come up with the flange focal distance. It may be you need more then the stock board. Or maybe you can get by with less.

I purchased a used factory recessed board intending to use it on my Calumet CC400. The recess is 30mm, or 1 and 3/16". I now have a field camera and the monorail sits unused. The recessed board is available if you're interested. I have sent you a PM with asking price.

Nick, CC-403 with the long bellows. 90mm f8 Super Angulon. It will fit and focus at infinity with a flat board but the bellows is a bit stiff for movemets. I now have the dimensions I need to make one or I'll just buy Ricks. Thanks for the replies.

I plan to make one also. Thanks for the info. 30 mm seems deeper than needed.

I'm a little suprised that lens focuses on a long bellows camera. My long bellows is over 100mm with everything tight. Maybe they had different bellows over the years and mine are less flexible.

Nick, I should have said it has a long rail (22"). The bellows must be shorter than yours. There is roughly 1" between the standards, with the 90mm SA focused at infinity on a flat board. I dont have any lenses longer than 210 right now, so I've never needed too much bellows extenion except for close ups.
