The new england contingent has been very quiet lately...hey, summer is over. The cool nights are upon us. Let's get together somewhere in the interim while we wait for Portland...maybe up in the Cape Ann area?? Anybody interested?

Lizz...you didn't come and play! It was a great day up on the other Cape. But now, does anyone know if Portland is still on? Reservations need to be made, anticipation needs to rise, excitement needs to build...etc, etc.

OK

Portland is still on, and I am sorting out Logistics.

Friday afternoon/evening the plan is to visit the arts district of Portland, where the galleries all stay open late, and tend to have all of their openings (first Friday of each month). Saturday morning we will meet at the Portland Museum of Art to check out their new photography exhibit, and then go on a shooting expedition. Colours are now at peak, but will have probably passed by the time we meet. We could either head South to places like Two Lights, and the ruins of Fort Williams, or we could head to the North, and visit places like South Freeport, depending on how much driving people are willing to do, we might drive up to Boothbay (nice fishing Village) and stop along the way in Wiscassett.

If you are planning on coming up, send me a PM, and I will reply with my cell number so that we can hook up.

I pm'd you. We might be taking the down-easter up...so no vehicle to get around...therefore, I'd have no problem with staying right in Portland to shoot. Hey, I know a great breakfast place across from the post office...kinda tight...but great food.

I'm still not 100 percent sure, but I am working up a plan to come up Friday and maybe even stay an extra day... wife would be coming up too; we have a friend to visit Sunday.

Hey man, I don't want to seem picky, and I don't want to hijack your outing, but none of the places you want to shoot are actually in Portland. Why not stay right here? Walk around a bit. Meet some people on foot. Enjoy my city. Longfellow called it, "that beatiful city, seated by the sea."

If anyone's interested, my little studio will be open for the First Friday festivities from 5 to 8. It's in the big State Theater Building at 615 Congress Street, suite 301. I hope you'lll come up and visit. PM me if you want better directions or a phone number.

So, is the state theater bldg in the arts district? We'll put you at the top of the list to visit... I'm assuming that these galleries are also open on Saturday?? so what we don't hit on friday, we can still hit them the next day. Also, I've never been over on the East end of portland...are there any interesting areas.. Munjoy Hill or at Loring Memorial Park? Isn't there a lighthouse there...on that end?

Hi Drew,

Thanks for putting me on the list. Yes, I'm in the Arts District, but Portland is so small everything's in reach. The studios are generally only open on First Friday, but the actual galleries should be open on Saturday.

The East End is nice. I used ti live on Munjoy Hill. There's some great views up there, some fine achitecture and a very historic cemetary. The lighthouse you're thinking of is the Portland Observatory. It's not a lighthouse. It was bulilt at the begining of the 19th century to watch for merchant ships coming into the harbor. Shipping companies would pay the guy who owned it to watch for their vessels. When he saw them he'd hang out the company flag so they could get their longshoremen in place to unload the ship when it got to the dock. Anyway, it's still there and there's still an amazing view from the top.

The embarassing truth is that there are no lighthouses in Portland. South Portland has two and Cape Elizabeth sports Portland Headlight.

Here's a link about the Observatory. Sadly, I think they closed on Columbus Day:

Art,

For Portland there's the Eastland Park Hotel, a very big, very old place in the heart of Portland. There's the Holiday Inn by the Bay downtown and the Hilton Garden down on the waterfront. My personal favorite is the charming Inn at St. John by the bus station. It's old school and more like B&B.

There are numerous chain motels out by the Maine Mall in South Portland.

There are a couple of higher-end B&Bs in the West End but I can't remember their names.

Freeport, home of LL Bean, is 20 minutes up the coast but I suggest you avoid it. If you wanna stay near fishing villages that are within an hour or so of Portland try Googling Phippsburg, Harpswell, Cundy's Harbor, Orr's Island, Bailey Island and maybe Cape Porpoise.
Thanks Troy. I'll check them all out. Hope to meet you there.

Regards, Art.

It sounds to me like there is a significant sentiment for staying in or at least close to Portland.

Troy - I didn't realize that you had a studio right in the middle of everything - would you be open to our using your studio as a meeting/gathering point on Friday afternoon?

I had heard a lot of interest in going further afield to see some of the 'fishing villages' on the coast, which is why I was suggesting possibly moving north, but you are right in that there is a lot to shoot right on the peninsula.

Since at this time of year, the weather is liable to be a factor, perhaps our best plan would be to meet on Friday afternoon and then figure out what to do for the rest of the weekend based on what people want to do, and what the weather wants us to do.

I'll be at the studio by five '0 clock at the latest, so yeah, you're all very welcomed to meet up there. PM me if anyone needs my cell number.

Again, I don't mean to hijack your thread, or outing either. I just love this city.

Drew, have you tried the Holiday Inn by the Bay, the Eastland, the Hilton Garden, the Inn at St. John, the Doubbletree? Those are the hotels I can think of right in town.

There is a convention up there...so many are full. (unlike the faulty towers quote below!) I've found a room about 5 miles out of portland!

You'll love the Inn at St. John. It's a trip. It's an old railroad motel and is close to the bus station. It's also a block from my house.

TROY.

I'm staying at the Inn at St. John http://www.resortsandlodges.com/util/click.php?p=2&r=487&t=lodging&f=all&v=all&l=3334&u=website
and rates are reasonable. Art, you will be closer to the action if you want to try this place, as they still have some rooms available. Oh, some changes, my wife won't be coming up (too long a drive) and I'm staying only friday night. I'll leave saturday night to go home. (can't miss the Indi/pats game on sunday)

Well, I reckon I'll need to be wearing my 6-shooter when I'm belly-up to the bar!

maybe a pm from troy or mark to "others" to see if they are coming up? The NE regional thread might not be checked by others too often. Suzanne, Vinnie, Moophews, James, Bill, Ed, and Lizz expressed an interest. I'm definately coming up....hell, I might even check out the real estate ads while I'm up there.....!
