I got the OK from the wife on the table, (boy that was easy...I guess as long as I call something "FREE" she will ok anything ). Next step is logistics, I'll have to measure the cargo area of the wagon.

Now there is an idea, Dolly might be able to help...
?

My wife “Dolly” is perfectly willing to lift anything up to an including the weight of a box of Kleenex. On the other hand she did make two pans of brownies today to give to the two ladies that helped rescue our Labrador when she (Cindy) took off the other day after shedding her identification tags. I believe that it is all a matter of priorities and I was happy to deliver the pans of brownies myself, all by myself.

And how many actually got there? :D Sorry Cindy went over the wall, but I'm glad she's back. Bet she was after the ultimate stick to retrieve.

the two ladies that helped rescue our Labrador

When I first read that I thought of your Laborator; if it were the case, the ladies would do well to help rescue the light table.

Wondering the same. 100+ weston prints less than an hour away, I'm sure I'll be there more than once but I'd like to meet up with everyone if I can. Looking forward to it. S

How does this read for a plan for the weekend of March 21-22? Come for all or part of the event. Saturday we meet for lunch at the Bo Long Chinese restaurant where most of us met to go see my show. Directions & time to follow. This is less than a mile from the Cleveland Art Museum. Saturday afternoon I would encourage you to hear “Friedlander Talks”, 2:30 PM, Tom Hinson, Curator of Photography. The museum is open until 5 PM.

If anyone missed my photo show of thirty 7”x17” contact prints of the Ohio & Erie Canal and Environment at Western Reserve Historical Society (10 AM - 5 PM), it has been extended until this summer and is open Saturday across the circle from the Cleveland Art Museum. (You knew I had to mention it.)

Saturday evening we can meet at our house, get take out Pizza and look at photography you bring.

Sunday morning, 9 AM, coffee will be served at the Powers house for conversation.

Sunday the Akron Art Museum is open 11 AM -5 PM for Weston and Friedlander. If you like we can meet for lunch at a Hungarian restaurant near the museum and gorge on Chicken Paprikash or anything lighter that you choose.

If you enjoy this visit you may want to come back for:
April 5, Sun 2:30 Friedlander at CMA, Peter Galasi MOMA NY
April 18, Sat 2:30 PM “Valley Views” at Akron Art Museum, lecture Barbara Tannenbaum, Chief Curator
May 17, Sun 2:30 PM CMA, Rod Slemmons Dir Columbia College, Chicago

Welcome,
John & Dolly Powers

Sounds good. That's our bowling week, so we'll have to leave about 2pm or so on Sunday, but we can't wait to see everyone.

I guess I have an excuse to get printing now!

If anyone wants to camp that weekend lets discuss it close to event time. There could be a lot of DEEP MUD and we might want you to camp close to the driveway. On the other hand we have had snow through the first week in April. Camping might be real chancy. We are on the west side of a steep hill and tend to thaw out two weeks after the rest of the neighborhood.

Dolly and I went to the Edward Weston exhibit last night. WOW!!!. I thought that it was the traveling one that was in Dayton 3-4 years ago. That one was wonderful. This one is wonderful. They are a different collections, a few overlaps, but not more than 10%. The lighting is great. The spacing is generous. Did I mention that the pictures are wonderful? Oh Great!! There is also what looks like an excellent Weston video going on next door. We only got to see a portion of it because the lecture we had come to hear was starting, but we are going back Saturday.

In honor of Edward and Tina we are going to the exhibit again Valentine’s day and then the Mexican Restaurant we went to with the group in September. I hope Chandler doesn’t show up wanting dinner.

We are looking forward to seeing the the Apug gang in March.

John, Dolly, Savannah and Cindy

Can't wait to see the exhibit, and you all as well. We just made our hotel reservations today.

Great news. What motel do you like? We will send Chandler there.

"This show is accompanied by a 30-minute video, Remembering Edward Weston, featuring interviews with Charis Wilson (his wife), sons Brett and Cole Weston, Beaumont Newhall and Dody Weston Thompson. Courtesy the Museum of New Mexico." Akron Art Museum

At last night’s lecture (2/12/2009) they mentioned that there will be an Edward Weston lecture in March given by someone from Bowling Green. Check this link to see speaker and date when they post it. http://www.akronartmuseum.org/calendar/list.php?catid=11

"An accompanying award-winning monograph published by Lodima Press contains insightful essays by Sarah M. Lowe and Dody Weston Thompson as well as “his and hers” collectors' prefaces by Hochberg and Mattis. Featuring full-size reproductions and printed in 600 line-screen quadtone on two different paper stocks for maximum fidelity to the originals, it is acknowledged as the most beautiful book ever published on Weston." Akron Art Museum

From the Lodima Press site, "Hardcover Edition: $195 (plus $10 shipping)" I might have to miss this one.

You may enjoy an excellent review of the Edward Weston show in the Akron Beacon Journal today. http://www.ohio.com/entertainment/39630137.html

I was high in my earlier price statement on the show catalog. They got a special volume discount. “There is a rather gorgeous catalog available, which is also rather expensive, but not as expensive as it would be elsewhere. Edward Weston: Life Work is $149.95 at the museum store. Online at Amazon.com, it's $195, and its regular list price is $198.” That still is a lot of money right now.

Peter Spangenberg asked me yesterday if the prints were vintage. “Most of the images seen here are from Weston's family, for whom he reserved his best prints. And all are vintage photographs, meaning they were printed by the artist shortly after he shot the image, which is important, because they represent Weston's original vision.”

Dolly and I saw the exhibit again yesterday. The more I see, the more I want to see. We will be back. Hope you join us.

"Forms of Passion" is one of the best books of Weston's work, duotone prints, large, and sold new for $40! You can still find it reasonably priced on the used market, but some sellers are asking loony-tunes prices.

I'm not too sure about the worth of "vintage ... printed shortly after taking the picture." The Cleveland Museum's A. Adams show (early 90's?) had series of prints made over the years from the same negative and it was interesting to see how his vision of the image changed over time. The worst prints were usually the early ones, then came the peak of interpretation, the last tended to be overwrought and lacking in any visual excitement. The Adams show that came through a few years ago, all drawn from a private collection, was loaded with these late and lifeless prints.

I would be interested to see the same of Weston: first prints, peak prints, the denouement and finally Bret's interpretations.

The Dayton show, 3-4 years ago, had a good and inexpensive paper back show book, "Edward Weston, A Photographer's Love of Life". The curator recommeneded that in addition to the show book I locate a copy of "Forms of Passion". eBay provided and I agree with Nicholas that it is one of the best Weston books.

Now if I could just be the proud owner of the collection Nicholas describes I would happily stage the exhibit.

I booked a room at the Hampton Inn Richfield (it's on Brecksville Rd). I'm planning on driving over Sat morning (promise I'll get up and going early) and meeting up with you all at the restaurant John mentioned (still need directions or could meet partway there).
I can't wait!

Bethe, Happy to read you are coming. If you can get to our house by 10 AM, Saturday, you are welcome to ride in with Dolly and me. Park in the driveway rather than down in the camping area. We would probably have to float your car out from the camping area with the inflatable rubber dingy. Let us know if we should expect you.

Shawn, did we ever figure out why you went to a different restaurant last visit? You said it was good, but we would like to enjoy your company at Bo Loong. Your friend Gene Paulson is welcome if he can join us.

Lee, thanks for the directions and address. Please know that Barbara and the boys are welcome to join us.

John,
I'm going to be out west from March 6th through the 11th which means I'll be in full on film processing mode by then... I'll mostly likely just either show up for 9 o'clock coffee Sunday or meet up with everyone at the exhibit. Gene will probably be with me either way. I'm itching to get back to the Ritchie ledges though... Surely for good weather later on in the spring. Hope everyone is well! Shawn

Lee and John, thank you both! John, if I can get out of here early enough, I'll take you up on the ride offer - can I call you that morning en-route to let you know if I'll be on time? If I don't get moving fast enough, that map is already saved to my phone, Lee.

Happy to have you both when ever you show. Call home if you need directions. PM here if you need the phone number. Bring stories and/or prints from your adventure west.
