Very nice. Is there any chance we could see them individually and larger? I think people new to the area would appreciate some label saying what and where they are. Long timers will be glad to help if needed.

Yes, given a choice my back will opt for heated, padded, auditorium seats over cold folding steel chairs any time. The projector and screen at the Akron Art Museum is also bit better. Regardless I am grateful all the Vivian Maier shows are coming to Cleveland and Akron.

Thank you Jeff. We hope to have the next gathering the Aug 2nd weekend. Maybe we can all go to that showing together.

About 9 years ago Lois Conner came to Cleveland & Akron, OH. She gave a lecture on her travels to China with a 7x17 she carried on a bicycle through the mountains. She critiqued the advanced photo classes at U Akron and gave a 3 day workshop introducing the students including myself to ULF and platinum printing. I was hooked, bought a 7x17 and took two more platinum workshops within a year.

“Artist talk: Lois Conner March 30, 2014, 2 PM. Lois Conner began her photographic explorations of China with a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1984. Since then she has returned annually, traveling extensively and using her 7x17 banquet camera to describe the landscape, architecture and people (creating images some find evocative of Chinese scrolls). This exhibition focuses on her work in Beijing, describing its transformation over the past 30 years. Join the artist for a look at her career and work on the opening day of Beijing: Contemporary and Imperial; Photographs by Lois Conner, on view March 30-June 29. “ Cleveland Museum of Art

“Beijing: Contemporary and Imperial: Photographs by Lois Conner is a vast visual tour of contemporary China, allowing us to reflect on China’s rising power in the context of its history and cultural landscape. The exhibition covers a span of three centuries, embracing the dynastic glory of the Qing and its decline, the revolutionary 20th century, and the post-imperial and post-socialist story of Beijing and China today.
A central focus of the exhibition is the Garden of Perfect Brightness, or Yuanming Yuan. This 800-hectare garden-palace was both China’s Versailles and Louvre. It was built and expanded from the 1690s until 1860, and served as both the de facto center of the Chinese empire as well as a site for elite Chinese culture. Buildings, follies, and waterways were constantly altered. Lois Conner received her MBA from Yale 1983 and has taught photography since at Yale and Princeton.

I read somewhere else that this exhibit will have 70 of her prints.

I don't often scan my prints, mostly because my old V500 scanner really couldn't do them justice. However my new V700 scanner seemed to do a good job!

It is interesting to learn what a first time visitor sees as he wanders about. These sites are relatively close to the party base. It was also interesting to see what attracted your attention as we explored the Cleveland Flats. Thanks for posting. The scanner works well as does the operator.

I enjoyed the gathering last May! I'd like to make this one, though I am not certain I can. But it would be fun!

For those with money to burn, that weekend is like Ohio's Official Camera Show Weekend. The Ohio Camera Society has their yearly auction on May 16 in Columbus, and the show/sale on May 17 - http://historiccamera.com/club/occs/

Thank you for the photorama information. For those who don't know, the hotel is less than five miles north of our house, just south of the Ohio Turnpike entrance. It is right across the street (Brecksville Rd.) form where the Richfield Family Restaurant where we usually have Sunday brunch. It is fun to browse there and see what discoveries appear.

Great Dale. Glad to hear it. We would like to kern more about your recently built darkroom. What is the current status. Is there any chance the group could have a tour?

Actually what is going on is that I am remodeling my office area adjacent to the darkroom. The unfortunate thing is that the darkroom has been turned into a temporary storage facility while the ceiling, floors and walls are being finished in the other room. It is sad to have this state of affairs, but the construction will end soon.

It looks like we're finally going to make one of your gatherings and are glad of it.

I have long wanted to photograph in the flats and look forward to the opportunity of doing so, if that's possible.

I'm not sure what the "pizza toll" is, we have good pizzas here, but I'm afraid it would be cold by the time we got to NE Ohio.

I'm off to order more film for this event.

We are glad to see you are at last coming back to Ohio.

The Flats await you. On weekends it is about 35-45 minutes north of here, off Rt. 77. The Flats are a lot more photo friendly on the weekends, especially Sunday. More than a few weekday construction sites have been ruined for photographs as their security people have escorted me back to the street.

If you are interested in the ships that pass through the Flats there is an Internet tool has made that much easier. Each ship has a transponder that reports every minute where the ship is and its planned course for the next 30 minutes. It also tells what ships are expected in port and when. https://www.marinetraffic.com/ee/

Set your view up for “Cle” the symbol for Cleveland and it will help you add a 600 foot freighter and/or tugs to your pictures.

You can enlarge the map to see what see what bridges and roads will be in the picture or how to get to the picture.

Attached are three Flats ship images from last year. I am working on a new Flats series I hope to show at the gathering.

That said I hope any previous gathering visitors will add their pictures, either of the Flats or some other places they have gone in NE OH.

We are really fortunate in having a wealth of photography subject matter in the neighborhood. 1.4 miles from our house we have the museum of 19th century farm equipment, 48 acres of a family’s private museum, which we are encouraged to photograph and enjoy. I made a series of 20 images, which I will post hoping to interest visitors. If you have been there and photographed, I hope you will add your pictures to this thread.

From the thread introduction, “Richfield, Ohio’s Jim Fry has created The Museum of Western Reserve Farms and Equipment, dedicated to preserving the tools, equipment, skills and way of life lived by Ohioans in the 1800s. Mr. Fry, a farmer, historian, and artist, has collected 44 buildings including what may be the largest surviving early blacksmith shop in Ohio, the oldest barn in the state, the Stouffer farm smokehouse, and one of the largest surviving post and beam barns in Summit County. The farm is constantly evolving as animals, tools, buildings, machines, in various states of preservation are added or combined into exhibits. It seems, according to "she who must be obeyed", that we have to be home Sunday as we have company arriving on Tuesday and the house needs cleaning, or so I'm told. So we will not be able to stay over Sunday evening. But we will be there Friday and Saturday.

I hope you will meet Shawn and Lynn while you are here. They have come to several of these events over the years. It is not a normal event unless they or his employer change their plans at least four times. We are happy they and you come and we just ride out the storm.

Storm? Storm? We can't have "storms". I'm shooting a 4x5, not some digital out a car window. No storms allowed. Although, my dark cloth is waterproof.

That is alright Pete. If a storm comes we will wrap the dark cloth around your head and you can hide under my desk with the middle dog, Cindy, who is also afraid of storms. Besides, we don't invite no stinking digy shooters here, windows or no windows.
