I'll tell you what, if you can bring some 12% AgNO3 solution and Sodium Thiosulfate (hypo) fixer, I'll supply the coated paper and selenium toner, and we'll see if we can make an albumen print happen! If you want to try your own negatives, make sure they have super high contrast!

Sounds like a plan. I have some extra
AgNO3, so I can bring some 12% with me. And I have about 5 pounds of Sodium Thiosulfate I think. That should be more than enough me thinks. . I don't have any Collodion negatives dense enough for albumen printing yet... But I have everything I need to do so. I will see if I can work on that by May.

Have you purchased a Joe Smigiel like RV, a Bill Schwab like trailer, or built something? Do we need to provide pasture for the horses or donkeys that will be pulling your period darkroom?

I do not have a setup like Bill has, although I would love to. I am using a dark box which I made with help from my brother-in-law and sister who sews.


I am not exactly portable, especially adding in hauling my water, chemicals, waste jugs etc. I was hoping to hire some sherpas when I got to your area. Let me know if you can recommend any!

Gosh Charlie. It seems so clear to me. A trailer has been shown by Bill to be a proven method. Jeff & Eva brought you here in the first place, have that perfect sized trailer, and the 4 wheel drive Jeep to pull it. They are coming to the event and have expressed an interest in going to the museum, with possible ice cream side trips. I have some ground cloth plastic they have borrowed before. I think you just have to talk them into letting you toss their bed onto the plastic while you use the trailer. Sherpas are really expensive this time of year here.

I think I did see that when I was looking around doing my research. His idea is really slick. I think sometime in the future I would like to have a trailer like Bill Schwab has. For now I will have to stay in close proximity to my vehicle, although I have been looking at a small'ish pull cart with bicycle type tires.

A number of thoughts ...

First, as John was amazed with how many different processes are represented at our events, I started thinking about how many different photographic interests we share as a group. Camera collecting, photograph collecting, camera tinkerers, ... and even someone who just likes taking photographs and has never made his own print yet (me! - although I do like my current arrangement using the Labwork guys!).

Second, I just scored 4 photography books at the Rocky River Half Price Books. They had quite a few books - probably 20 feet of shelves - if any of the locals are interested. Which leads me to my third point ...

Third, John - if we ever need a west side of Cleveland stopping point, if for nothing else than a "pit stop", my place is always available.

...and in the theme of doing kind things for others in the group, Dolly and I just stopped at the Country Maid Ice Cream store for the early in the year quality control test. Jeff Bannow, you will be delighted to know that they survived the winter without our patronage. The flavors are just as extensive as last year. The taste is every bid as good as we remembered. Come on down.

There were 2 book cases, with 4 shelves each, and each shelf was probably 3 feet wide. I only noticed one of them at first. When I backed up and saw the other I said "WOW" out loud. I bought "Photography After Frank", a small book from the Musee d'Orsay on Maurice Denis, "The Family of Man" (my second copy - but this one is a hardcover), and "Diary of a Century" (Lartigue).

It's likely that I can make the May gathering, last minute surprises possible as always.

I've gotten a lot of photography books from Half-Price Books in North Olmsted. They have pretty good prices, and about the same shelf space for photography as the Rocky River location according to Jeff's description. The selection varies with who's traded in books recently, so lots of the best stuff comes in waves. Coincidentally, my wife was at the Musée d'Orsay a couple of days ago.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again. Anyone heard from Dan Henderson about the gathering? He should only be about 7-8 hours away in his new location.

I have found the Half-Price Books in North Olmsted to have a better selection and much better prices than the Half-Price Books near Rt. 271 on I think it is Mayfield Rd. I wasn’t aware of the one in RR, but then that is a long ride from here. I haven’t been there often. I miss the fellow who regularly came to the Photorama swap meets from IN with two or three boxes of photo books. Many of mine came from him, 3-5 per event.

Barbara does travel to interesting and delicious places. I envy the good parts, but I know she works very hard and that sort of travel can wipe you out.

I will send an email to Dan. A lot of the people who have attended our gatherings in the past no long are regular Apug readers.

Books on photography is something I really enjoy. An amazing resource I found is www.abebooks.com. I used to get my used text books there while in classes. One day I typed in photography in the keyword search area and have not stopped buying books, most about $ 4.00 or so, including delivery.

Have a new virgin lens to bring to the gathering. A 285mm Wollsaton lens, mounted on a hardboard clone of a Technika lensboard built by Reinhold Schable with several waterstop (sp?) f stops. Makes me one with the shutter. Haven't tried it yet but Reinhold makes nice looking lenses. Many examples of the Wollsaton lenses here on APUG and on Reinhold's website.

Anyone here on this thread have any experience being a human shutter with a hat or dark slides. I've seen the You Tube stuff and can probably pull it off. Picked up an ND filter to put in front of the lens to help with slowing down the shutter speed while shooting wider open for the Wollsaton effect.

I used a lens cap yesterday on a lens without shutter. The lens is a Repromaster 213mm from a plate burner that Peter got for me from the Amish print shop salvage business where several of us have gotten beautiful equipment. The bracketed exposures were 45 seconds and six minutes. We had hoped the lens would have coverage for 7x17. It did not. I am trying it now with my 8x10. The first negative developed last night looked good.

Several years ago Peter and I were shooting in the main stairwell of the Cuyahoga County court house. I was half way through a 15 minute exposure when a lady walked up the stairs. She looked at my 8x10 with me staring at her while standing beside it. She asked if I were taking pictures. I said yes. She smiled and read the plaque on the landing in the middle of my picture. She called her daughter from off camera to come look at the plaque. The daughter came up the stairs and read the plaque. Then they turned and went back down the stairs, all the time with me standing beside the camera. Having anticipated such a problem I had put the dark slide over the open lens when I heard the first the woman coming and stopped my timer. When they left I removed the dark slide and started the timer again. The picture worked out pretty well.

Of possible interest to locals. The annual (NOBS) Northern OH Bibliographic Society’ s Akron Antiquarian Book & Paper Fair will be held on Friday, April 6, 2012 and Saturday, April 7, 2012 at the John S. Knight Center, 77 East Mill Street, Akron, Ohio.
This is just a couple of blocks west of the Akron Art Museum. The Fair will be Friday 3:00 pm to 8:30 pm and Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 PM

Probably 50 book dealers will be there. Each year I have found more good looking photography books than I could afford. Dolly agrees.

In this weeks Shywrighter (Local newspaper) there was an interesting item. The Ohio Camera Collectors Society is now accepting consignments for its annual camera auction on May 25. Call 419-674-6718

Might be an extra outing to go to the auction, or a place to unload that uber-clean 100 year old camera you have been holding onto.

In Gatherings past we have offered “for sale” items. What I think has worked best was if individuals posted what they might offer. Then if someone posted an interest the seller felt it was worth packing up that item and driving it here. The reverse might work, where someone posted a “wanted to buy” wish and others said they had that item or something similar and would bring it. That I’m guessing is more of a long shot, but if it works, great.

A Photography Show for the NE OH Locals

Hey everybody! If you can't wait until John's next gathering to see some LF work, you can always stop by Aperture Tremont this coming Saturday night and see my latest show (details below).



Dapper – A Distinct Photography Show - opens at Aperture on April 14th.
This outstanding show will feature the work of Mat Marrash, who you may know from the Film Photography Podcast. Mat’s show at Aperture is a documentary exhibit on the world’s second oldest profession, barbering. Mat toured the Northeast and Midwest in search of old-school barbershops, and shot his images with an Eastman Commercial B 8×10? camera. He then meticulously processed and printed each image in the darkroom, by hand. He used Ilford HP5+ film, and all the prints were made on silver gelatin fiber paper, then selenium toned for archival permanence.

This are some of the most unbelievable images we have seen in a very long time. Mat even made a special trip to the Barber College in Ohio City!

Dapper will run from April 14th to April 28th, with an opening reception/party on April 14th. Aperture’s opening receptions are always a blast!
