NE OH Gathering: August: 5-6-7, 2011

I would love to go, never been, although the moons are not aligned! I wish you all the best, sounds very fun, I would have loved to photograph that circus! Love that small town reportage scene. Your grounds sound like a wonderful retreat! Thanks for the invite, maybe next time. Best - Andy

Thank you for your interest. We often have members from the Midwest Large Format Asylum visit our gatherings. http://www.dunnamphoto.com/midwestlf/index.htm Many of them are from Chicago and up into WI. If your Multi format classification takes you into Large Format, you might find accomplices closer to home (Chicago). At our last event in May we had three MLFA (WI, IL, IN) pile in one car and come to our event, saving gas and enjoying each other.

Just for a frame of reference O'Hare airport is 360 miles from our house. Drive time depends a lot on construction schedules.

You are welcome to join us in the future if not this event. We expect to have another gathering early in October.

Hi John-
I have a couple of new ones I have added to the collection. One is an "arrowroot" print that looks about as close to Pt/Pd as anything I've ever seen in silver. I had to slow down a bit. Spent the entire day today cleaning/organizing my work area and remodeling the darkroom. I think it's about as state of the art as it's going to get. Anyone interested in a Development by Inspection demo?? (John's darkspace permitting?? I'd be happy to share my method.

Count me in. I suspect that if a good size group shows up you may need to make a couple of runs. I really got a lot out of your earlier Pt/Pd demo.

If it is too hot to be outside another thing we can do is visit the Akron Art Museum’s
Flora exhibit. Here is how the museum describes it.

“Since the Garden of Eden, humans have been seduced by plants. Around 25 works, all drawn from the collection of the Akron Art Museum, will survey the different approaches photographers have used to depict the plant world. Romance, sensualism or eroticism permeate floral still lifes by Imogen Cunningham, Mariana Yampolsky, Stephen Tomasko and André Kertesz. Daido Moriyama’s lush but flawed rose evokes the fleeting existence of physical beauty. Judith McMillan allows us to see the interior anatomy of plants in her x-ray photograms. We have another benefactor. He has not been to one of our events, and is now a digital shooter, but he would like to donate a large light table. If someone is interested there are two ways we can handle access. If you are coming here on the OH Turnpike from west of here, he can meet you at Exit 4 just south of Sandusky. If you are coming from east or south, he has offered to deliver it here. I can hold it in the garage for up to a week before the event. Here is his description of the table.

I have his email, so whoever wants it can talk to him directly. Post that you want it and I will PM you the contact information.

Here's the scoop: 33 x 43 inches, and 11 inches deep. No stand, so it should fit in
just about anyone's trunk. I used it on a table. Lights work -- or they did the last time
I used it -- but I don't think they are balance for color work. We only used for B&W
at work.

Would anyone be interested in a 2 1/4 X 3 1/4 Durst A600 color enlarger? cheap but not free, sorry. I'm still thinking about coming down.
 
I haven't seen it. I suppose I should go over to his house and get a picture of it. It does medium format only (and 35mm) and comes with a condensor head and dichroic head, and a voltage control and some lenses. He paid $600 but will probably take $200 or will negotiate. (best offer)
 
Looks like my girlfriend Lynn and I will be coming sometime Saturday morning and staying through Sunday afternoon. The regulars know that means we'll be going somewhere super early to photograph Sunday morning. =)

I'll try and have as much new work mounted as I can before then. Can't wait to see everyone (and your work) again, it's been too long. I met up with John, Dale and Peter this winter but I don't remember when I saw the rest of you last... Hopefully there will be some new faces as well.

OK. So I'm trying to wrap my head around the concept of Shawn as a Sunday 6 a.m. herder of photographic cats... and to be honest, it's just not working for me. I appreciate efforts to stretch and play against type, but I think this one should go back to central casting for reconsideration.

Maybe that Marion Morrison guy from Iowa.

I think we had a misunderstanding Lee. I saw it as Shawn and Lynn being the only ones up. Since he is showing her around, he is in charge.

Maybe I have been missing what was going on in the past when Dolly and I just stayed in bed and caught up with the group at coffee hour or more recently at breakfast in Richfield.

Not really. I've just been out shooting with Shawn early on a number of Sunday mornings (access gates still locked at the Ledges and such), sometimes with a few other folks, and I've never noticed any propensity for him to herd anything other than his film holders.

=) Ha! That's great guys! I think Lee L has it, he's usually out there with me. I always let people know where I'm going (and sometimes they come along!) but I'm definitely not a herder.... as if this group could be herded!

I will of course do the same this time around if anyone would like to join us. I've driven past Howe Meadow, I believe it's called, on the way to other places early in the morning numerous times. It's gorgeous at those hours and I was thinking of starting things off there on Sunday. The other area I was considering is the bottom of the U area at Ritchie Ledges, that closest to the Octagon parking lot. I've never been in that section of the ledges at dawn before and it seems to me like there might be some interesting side lighting. Lee L and I have wandered through after spending dawn in the section between Ice Box Cave and the Big Stone Stairs but it was well after daybreak by the time we made it over there.

Anyway, we'll figure it out Saturday. Again, can't wait to see everyone!

Things are chaotic and unpredictable here, and I expect them to remain that way for a good while, so it's a day at a time. I may not stay overnight, as there are things here at the ranch that might need my attention overnight, and that may mean a bit later start for me Sun morning.

Short answer: I do plan to be there for as much of the weekend as circumstances allow, and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone.
