A few days ago I posted here and, after one intelligent response, my entire thread was deleted by APUG. I am not angry. I am genuinely intrigued. I must have aroused someone even though my intentions were noble.

My post was about something that, also, a dozen years ago, was quickly hushed-up. Quickly and definitivly hushed-up. What 'deviance' had I promulgated? I talked about something with a protrusion. WOW!

A dozen years ago one of the photo magazines had a half-page article, complete with photo, about a 'cassette' that looked like a 35mm film cassette with a protrusion that looked like a normal cassette with film leader. It was, actually, a digital capture device that would conveniently fit into a 35mm SLR, like film would, and allow digital capture at the film aperture of the SLR (hence, the 'protrusion') sensor which fit conveniently over the film aperture.

I was curious as to whether any here remembered that prototype and whether the marketing forces for digital cameras quickly assassinated that entreprenuerial attempt (talk about the 'free market', ha!). Producing this device would surely cut into the 'necessity' of manufacturing digital cameras but, as I clearly remember, no further talk was 'allowed' in that magazine (Popular Photography???) after that publisher's 'mistake'. Now, more of the same' protection of the vulnerable' at APUG.ORG with their deletion of my 'dangerous' post???

This David Lyga is truly lethal. This deletion is surely more relevatory and more revealing than is genuine 'hard core' pornography, I think. Thoughts? - David Lyga

I read of the same thing, say about a year ago. It was snake oil, it wasn't an operating prototype. As for the deletion, I would be asking (privately) whomever deleted the thread. Not making a new thread about the deletion.

I'm guessing it was deleted because it involved digital capture, a topic better suited to DPUG.

Yes, I remember the announcement of this device. It was around the mid 1990s.

I believe there were also some rumors at that time about digital backs for certain still-popular (at that time) 35mm & medium format film SLRs.

I agree that "assassinated" is a good choice of words.

Definitely a conspiracy, probably perpetrated by the combined forces of the FBI and Homeland Security, Sean is doubtless under close arrest and on his way to Guatanamo Bay and the same people who killed the White Steam Car all those years ago are behind it. Big Oil.

^ Yes, and there were rumors about something similar for the FE/FM/FA cameras and possibly others as well.

Where no one will read it, much less post about it.

For what it's worth, I think this was a hoax and, even if it weren't, the price such a thing would have to sell for would mean it would be much cheaper to just buy a good DSLR.

I think there needs to be a better place to discuss hybrid workflow, as no one goes to DPUG. Fortunately the large format photography forum accomodates such quite happily, even when it involves other formats.

This device, if it did exist, is clearly not hybrid though.

Slip in digicapture - Nice idea except how does one protect the sensor?

Reminds me that I read in a UK magazine that Alpa Reflex's reputation for innovation caused them to be the butt of an April issue joke in a European photographic magazine, possibly Camera Magazine Lucerne. The history/legend/myth was about the "Alpa Reflex XS", a camera which used an electrosensitive reflecting/transmitting plate instead of a mirror. This gave a staggering range of speeds and was without moving parts, noise or vibration. Gone were the mirror, shutter and all those springs and things. This was an April fools joke, or a joke about a joke, but just think. . .

This is a real recollection, not a joke about a joke about a joke - I used Alpa reflexes for years, but got fed up with the lack of affordable second hand lenses - I then moved up format to Rolleiflex after a brief encounter with a Pentacon Six outfit - I still use Rolleis for small format work

^ I think that's why building such a device into a back would have been a much more viable idea.

Any film camera with a removable back is theoretically capable of being converted to digital. Thus there is a digital back for the RZ67 (or was) and other cameras of similar ilk.

BTW, was that X-rated post about a "dorsal hangus longus" - to give it the latin name to avoid censorship. Of course, latin slang referred to it as the "elongus projectus". :D

I hate how everything that is even slightly digital related is shoved off to DPUG, even if it involves a mostly analog process. Everything on this website is digital data, move all the posts here to DPUG too!

I'm not advocating for a shift in the goal of APUG to be all about analog photography, I understand why that is, but a little diversity never hurt. I personally think that we should still have a Hybrid forum instead of DPUG, as the goal of DPUG, as the name implies, is strictly digital.

It's kind of annoying to have posts totally deleted off the site and then having to re-type them. It would be nice if they were put into some sort of Hybrid section, or at the very least have some sort of better DPUG cross platform ability.

There used to be a defined "Gray Area", and a conscious decision was taken to remove it. While not everyone necessarily agrees that that was the right call, I think it's pretty unlikely at this point that there are any arguments the Powers That Be haven't already considered, and it doesn't look like things are changing.

Unfortunately, hpug.org is registered to some guy in Texas. There's a server there but it serves up a blank page; maybe he's not using it and the hybrid community can buy up the domain?

The origional post was about digital capture, albeit using an analog device, a hybrid process none the less, which is against the terms of service of APUG (which you agreed to when you became a member), I am not sure why you think it was appropriate here on APUG? Your public complaining about the moderation of your origional post is also against the terms of service:

"-If you vehemently disagree with a moderators decision contact us offline -DO NOT TAKE IT OUT ON THE MODERATOR. Do not post a thread to discuss your disagreement, and do not send hostile messages to staff. We are very protective of our staff and will swiftly remove accounts that show hostility towards them."

"-Questions regarding digital techniques or digital techniques connected with traditional processes should be posted at hybridphoto.com (or the many other digital oriented sites)."
