I was half way through a roll of film and the shutter of my FE locked up. the mirror tripped and the blades in the lens tripped but the shutter did not trip and I cannot advance the film. I rewound the film and inspected the inside and nothing obvious jumped out at me.

Any ideas?

Go with the lithium batteries. They last MUCH longer and are impervious to extreme cold.

The Energizer 2L76 lithium and Duracell DL1/3NB lithium Batteries are fantastic replacements for the Nikon FM, FE, FE-2, etc. They last MUCH longer that stacking the two tiny alkaline cells.

I agree...The (Energizer) Lithiums are the way to go. I use 'em (AA) in my Nikon F4s, with no worries.
