I just bought a used Nikon F3 from B&H Photo. I've noticed there are scratches on my shutter curtain. I'm new to shooting film so I'm not sure if this is serious or what. I've shot 3 rolls of film so far. I'll be developing them on Friday.

Alright. I'm just afraid that being a newbie with film cameras I ended up scratching the shutter curtain while loading a roll of film. And I never checked to see if the scratches were already there when I received the camera. D'oh!

Watch to make sure that no more show up, which could indicate something stuck in there (not likely).

It looks to me like maybe someone dragged a fingernail across it, possibly to feel the embossing.

I think pretty much all of us have scratched our shutter at least once. Just don't put your finger through it.

I didn't say welcome to APUG earlier, so... welcome! Try slide film.

I was also thinking it might've scratched when I was rewinding the film? I rewinded it back up about halfway when I got confused and started winding it back in.

And thanks for the welcome.

Rewinding didn't cause it.

That matte paint on the curtain shows marks pretty easily. Mine looks more or less like that, and I bought the camera new, i know nothing has ever touched the shutter with any force. I suspect that just a film leader dragging across in loading or unloading could cause it. Nothing to worry about. The shutter is titanium foil, as long as nothing has contacted hard enough to distort it, there is no problem.

No you shouldn't be worried, the Nikon FF2 And F3's shutter curtains are made of dimpled Titainium foil that's how it should be.

The F3 is a beautiful machine, enjoy it. And welcome!

I once held an F3 which had a shutter curtain that was completely bare Ti except for the low spots. The lens mount had also partly fallen off. Did the shutter fire? yes it did. F3s don't die easy.
