picked this baby up today, body only, for $275 with a tarmac camera bag and a Speedlite 540EZ. man this flash lights the world up. the camera has had 19 rolls put through it in its entire life. it was donated to our photo club at school by a guy who got it, shot 19 rolls, went completely digital. the thing is in better shape than my 1 year old Canon 40D.
any thoughts, suggestions, opinions, recomendations on the camera? im all ears
Thanks,
Robert
oh and this is my first post on APUG i believe, been a lurker for a whiile
Robert,
Nice pics. The 1N's really sexy pictured reclining on its owner's freshly pressed pillow slip. Lovely! Way to go!!
Way back in Feb 2002, I bent over backwards to get my 1N+PDBE1 (upgrade from long-serving EOS5) and it has performed flawlessly in Australia, New Zealand, UK and China; the PDBE1 hasn't even had a battery change since 2003 -- 8 x FR8 lithium, for lightweight.
Very importantly, get to understand the Custom Functions, and memorise (or attach a tag to the camera strap with details) at least 3 of those you consider most important for spontaneous in situ changes, for example, mine are:
- Exposure steps in 1/3, 1/2 or 1 (Cf6)
- Mirror lock exposure 2 secs then fire (Cf12)
- Evaluative / CWA meter; this setting on the display is unclear; always check which of these two meters with Cf8.
Trinkets...
If you can find one (and they are now surprisingly cheap i.e. under $100 where once they cost $840), add the
Command Back E1 (timer, intervalometer, repeater, self timer... occasionally found on eBay, but mine came from Adorama NY). Why? Star trails (I'd rather be sleeping...), unattended nature shots... Leave the camera out (even at night) with the intervalometer settings worked out and let it start, stop, wait, etc., even fire the flash. Besides, even without that gizzmo, in summary, you've got a modern, film-based marvel still in wide and highly respected use by analogue professionals. Enjoy!
