I thought I would not only show off my new plate camera but also decided to create a new forum for these types of cameras as well. I eyed this camera on ebay for a week and was up till midnight waiting to pounce on the final bid (thanks to Jeremy for the tip off!). It is a Thornton Pickard Imperial Triple Extension Half Plate. I did not think I would get it so was ready for dissapointment but won out in the last 3 seconds. I am not a huge collector of cameras but do have a few on proud display around the house. This was a double win for me since the camera is a 100yr old pristine and beautiful collectible but it's also 100% usable and ready for work. I plan to do mostly half plate ambrotype portraits with this cam, and use my 8x10 for typical field work. The cam is being shipped to the US and I'll pick it up there before I head to the conference. :D

Now that is truly a thing of beauty!

Congratulations Sean, and I'm glad such an elegant creation will be doing what it was made to do rather than mouldering in some cupboard.

Not only was I battling GAS but I was dealing with EBSS (Ebay Bidding Stress Syndrome), you know pulse rate at 200bpm 10 minutes before and after closing can take it out of you

hola hola!!!

That's a real beauty.

BTW, you didn't steal those images from eBay, I presume? You only bought the camera

Sean,
just a quick tip - I have a half plate Lancaster of similar vintage which is fitted with the TP roller blind shutter. The blind on mine is quite porous, but otherwise runs at 1/30 quite happily. If you find yours leaks light it shouldn't be too hard to replace the blind.

There was a thread in the camera mods forum which gave details of a japanese seller who could supply suitable cloth and he even shows how to rebuild a shutter curtain. I'm yet to order anything from him but will get around to it soon as I have three TP shutters that need rebuilding.

BTW that is a beautiful camera. I try to buy cameras that will be used, if only occasionally, and I'm sure that using that one will be a very pleasurable experience.

Hey Sean,
that looks like the one that I sold to the Camera Exchange in Melbourne in 1990, even down to the three holders.

Sean

Congrats, she looks lovely.

Is this an example of the camera you said you would mail to each APUG subscriber as a way of thanking us

Sean, that's one beautiful camera. Congrats on the snag.

If the trip back to Kiwi Land from the conference is too long, you could always stop over in New Mexico so I could fondle it, too.

Great, now we'll NEVER get any work done. You know what a talking point that'll be out in the field.

So does this mean an impending change in avatar ... ?

Sean, that's one nice camera, what kind of forum are you considering, is it a field camera, folding wooden like the Kodak 2D, clamshell etc? I have two Seneca's and Two Kodak 2D's and a 4x5 folding field, clamshell type. They are close to a hundred years old and are refinished to the original perfection. I am gong to be making a wood 11x14 with my son and like the wood cameras a lot. It will be like the Deardorff in overall design with some modifications of our own. Again Deardorff is the quality of choice, enjoy!

Hi Sean,
You could have the camera shipped to my place just out side of Toronto and I'll bring it to the Conference. I'll be having a LF booth at the conference.

Thanks Rob but it already shipped days ago, I'll have access to it in SC before I head to the conference so can bring it along.
