I just purchased a well used ATL-3 which works well but has a couple of problems. One of them is the plunger (equivalent to the prostate?) that appears to need replacing because it constantly leaks.

The other more pressing problem is the automatic lift. This poor machine just can't get it up. About halfway in the drain cycle it stalls and starts bucking and shaking and wont drain the chemistry. I have to assist with lifting the drum all the way and - well its a little uncomfortable having to intervene in something that should happen automatically.

Is this a large repair job and should I attempt to fix such a delicate process seeing that Im a complete amatuer when it relates to darkroom urology?

You should probably get the advice of a doctor (skilled repair technician). Perhaps call Omega Satter. Don't try any self-treatment unless you know exactly what you are doing.

You don't need a prescription, you can extenze it yourself. Jump right in take it part and take some digital pictures as you go so you will know how to get it together again. It might be relays, bad wiring, or gearing. If there is a cover you can take off and watch it run then you might see what is catching. There might be a limiter or switch that has a bent lever. Just my two cents worth. I always try to go the look at it route before I just hand it over to someone else who might do the same thing.

Good luck,
Curt

I would do it that way, but I have an engineering background. The fact that he has to ask here means that he is unsure and not skilled enough to do this kind of job.

Oh, OK, Im sure you know best.

Old fashioned toilet ball-valve from hardware shop can do the job

Do you have the manuals (service, or user's)?
