You and your family have it right. Keep doing what you are doing.

The only ones that "need fixin' " are the dunderheads posting that "your son needs fixin' ". The dunderheads are the ones with the emotional and social problems. They are the ones who were brainwashed with less than half a thimble of water into their political and religious dogma that they are unable to emotionally or logically deal with anyone that disagrees with them. The world would be greatly improved if the dunderheads were euthanized.

He says "a bit of everything, mom...". It's his dad that called him a goth. He says he is "a live and let live". And he grew up a blond clean cut boy. Today, our "dark" looking son comes to Blues festivals with us, comes to the opera with me, listens to folk with his French uncle, and enjoys jazz and classic rock. (grunge too-Nirvana) So really, I understand that he does not want to identify with only one group, typical of our son.

Sounds like a pretty cool kid! Good job!

Just be careful with that last part... Despite wishing those types of people didn't exist, there's another person I can think of who thought that a certain group should be euthanized based on his personal beliefs too, and that didn't turn out well...

Like my Destini, she doesn't call it Gith, Emo, or such, she just puts on her gear! Her doctor's, and nurses loved it all! It brought back college years, and some were not much older than she, nor, I! I'm 38, she was 16 nearly 17 then.

I applaud your forward thinking and acceptance of your child's choices in dress, gender , mate choices, and anything else I'm missing. Good job parental unit!

Just let the kid be.

Whether he grows up to be a true rebel throwing molotovs, or a white collar with a boring life, or an artist contemplating the vanity of all, or whatever, one thing is for sure.

He will laugh with his naiveté and actions when he was younger.

No matter how many or how grave the "mistakes" (or more like, decisions) you make, you *always* become wiser, than if you played it safe.

You know what I think when I see an old tatted man?
This dude sure lived his life, sure as he'll made lots of mistakes, and definitely has some good advice and insight to offer.

Wow, I can't believe I've just gone through 8 pages of people faffing about the kid in the photo with hardly any comment about the photo itself!
What a waste of time.
Anyway, going back to the topic of this thread (the photo, in case someone forgot it), on my screen the photo looks quite contrasty, the blacks don't have any details and the highlights looks blown out, especially on one side of his face, where the skin looks white, without details. Someone may argue that it works with the subject matter of the picture (a goth kid, according to the title), and I could agree with that but I'm not a fan of how we completely lose the right eye in a pool of black and how his legs seem to merge with the black seat.
On the other hand, it might just be my monitor, it's hard to judge a print online.
Personally I'm not 100% sure about the crop either, why did you crop his feet? The cropped feet aren't a major issue, but maybe it would have been better to crop a little higher.

I see the blowout but not the lost eye (our right, his left), so there may be a monitor difference in the shadow handling. Contrasty for certain, and I agree, "too much exaggerated contrast" vs. "works with the subject matter" is largely a matter of taste. To me the eyeliner saves it by making his eyes prominent against the exaggeratedly white skin.

The vagueness caused by the loss of shadow detail at the bottom just brings attention to the face, IMHO. It might help that effect to crop the bottom a little tighter.

Now I've looked at the shadow on his face too closely for too long, and all I can see is "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield". (Link SFW.)
