Here we go for another round of the Monthly Shooting Assignment. Thank you everyone for your kind words.

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Dave and I am based in northwest Washington State, U.S. I am new to the MSA but had a lot of fun last round.

The assignment for this time is "Angles and Curves". It can sometimes add interest to an image to incorporate lines that are straight or curved. Lines are all around us. They occur in nature, architecture, street photography and a thousand other places.

For any new readers, here's the basic idea of the MSA : (copy)
1. Take note of the MSA assignment, which will be inserted into the title of this thread.
2. Take your photo(s) according to the assignment guidelines. Try to shoot something new rather than grabbing from your archives.
3. You can post your photo in the MSA Gallery or, you can host your photo elsewhere and link to it in this thread, or, you can post it as an attachment to a message here in this thread and it will show as a clickable thumbnail.
4. It's all for fun, there are no prizes, but at the end of the MSA, a previous winner will choose a new assignment and a new "victim" to lead the MSA in the next two months.
5. How to upload: the same as in the standard gallery, press upload, then push on the "Categorie", you find a drop-down menu and press the Monthly Shooting Asignment, it’s placed under the "Member organized functions" and enter the rest, that's it. If you aren't a subscriber, you cannot upload to the galleries so subscribe first.

I don't care if you submit one photo or several.

Oh, the most important thing is to have fun!

Hi Dave!
Interesting assignment! Can you post some examples of what you're looking for to "prime the pump" so to speak?

Sure!

Bridge Rail.jpg

Angles can be in the railing to a bridge.

Web.jpg

Sometimes the smallest of creatures can give us angles.

Curves.jpg

Sometimes there are no straight lines, but the curve in the road ahead.

Angles and curves are all around us if we can just see them.

Inside a covered bridge in North Carolina. I used two flashbulbs to light up the interior and even out the exposure.

I'm in. Just loaded a roll of TriX in the RZ so this will give me something to think about when I'm out shooting.

Robb,
Welcome aboard! These Assignments don't get too specific. It is nice to get thinking about these basic ideas and keep working on a fairly regular basis.

Dave, Glad you liked my Curves/cane image. You were right! There are angles and curves everywhere! I actually shot a whole roll in one day, with examples of both. It was quite fun! I posted what I thought were the best, but I have lots more.
Thanks for opening my eyes up to the angles and curves I never really saw before...

I thought that this exercise would be an aid in composition. Seeing a line or an angle or a curve can add interest to an image and at some point it becomes natural to see potential pictures that include a way to add interest of the picture's viewer. The danger in this is if overused, it can become a cliche.

Today is October 13th and we have a couple of weeks left for this installment. A big thank-you to all who have participated and encouragement to those of us who are procrastinators.

Hope everyone enjoys them.

I see that we have had a few more submissions and now there are only a few more days to go. I have always enjoyed seeing the MSA entries and this month is no exception.

Time to close out "Angles and Curves"

Tonight is Halloween and I have to pick a photograph for a winner and Leader for the next round of MSA. I would like to thank everybody for their time and effort for this round. I always enjoy viewing the images for these assignments.

Bertus gave us a wonderful start with his lith prints "Curves in the Ark" and "Mirroring Ark" and finished us off with "Angles in the Qrucious Water".

ArtO had a color shot "Oak trees at Highland Memorial Park".

barbara ann had a series of images "Beach Chairs", "Lamp Post" and "Beach House Details" and her Photo "Curve of a Cane".

Kav made a nice shot of a "Covered Bridge" with a Speed Graphic.

nsuoto gave us a pair of architectural shots in color "Up the Space Port" and "Unusual Angle".

sly had a variety of nice photographs "Verandah, Morning Sun", "Standard Vanguard" , "Inky Caps in Tree Cavity", "Greenhouse Wall" and "Bikes".

I have a couple of favorites out of all of this but now I have a problem. The Photo that I liked the best is barbara ann's "Curve of a Cane". It is a really nice shot and I liked it immediately. The problem is that she lives in New Jersey and the had a hurricane tear the place apart a couple of days ago. I hope that all is well with her, but her last activity on APUG was October 23rd. I don't know if they have power or what is going on and I am getting a little worried. I may have to pick an alternate "winner" if we don't here something in a couple of days.

Its a small world. I am heading up there to assist with the relief effort now. I may run across her.

Barb, if you see any huge helicopters give us a wave.

Good choice Dave, it's a terrific photograph. I hope that Barbara and her family are doing well too. I really enjoyed the msa and want to add that I found all of the photographs to be excellent and a great encouragement in my own photo activities.

Hello all!
Yes, I survived Hurricane Sandy with minimal damage. Just got power back today and immediately checked APUG to find my photo had been chosen for the Sept./Oct contest! What a day brightener after a dark week! Delighted since the competing photos were of such high caliber!
Please folks, give me a day to catch my breath and I will come up with a topic for November/December. Thanks for all your good wishes. My heart goes out to all those whose lives were severely impacted by this monumental storm.
Check back tomorrow and I promise I will have selected a topic for the next contest.
Best Regards,
barbara ann

Dear Fellow MSA members,
Well, this has been a week to remember here on the East Coast. Although my town and myself emerged relatively unscathed from Hurricane Sandy, most people were not so lucky.
The newspapers and TV channels (when I finally was able to access them) were filled with the most horrible images of devastation. I freely admit I wept at the horror of it all.
But we must move on, thanks to folks like Kav, clean up and rebuild. With that in mind, the most symbolic of the dawning of a new day is a Sunrise!
So help me erase the pictures of destruction from my eyes and give me instead photos of the most beautiful sunrises you can find!
Color or B&W. Just show me the sun lifting up into the sky, bringing with it hope and courage that things will return to normal, no matter how long it takes.
Topic for November/December: Sunrises

PS Backstory on Curve of a Cane: I was especially pleased that the image of my friend Edna, holding her cane was selected as best. Edna has COPD but she will not let it keep her down. She manages to keep going, with her trusty cane to help her.
She is not a whiner or complainer and gives me more support and credit for my photographic efforts than I deserve. As I sat on a bench beside her, looking for Angles and Curves to photograph, I saw the curve of the cane she was holding and captured the shot...
