First, thank you @Maris for selecting my submission for April. It is a honor to have been selected from the many excellent photographs that were entered. I hope this subject will be fun for all. I have selected "COMMUNICATION" as photography is a form of communicating and lends to a wide latitude of subjects from words spoken and printed to as far as a photograph of two dogs sniffing each other. The rules as always:
MSA Guidelines
For first-timers, the following summary of standard procedures should help (we are indebted to Ken Nadvornick for putting most of this together, and not objecting when this member organized activity moderator proposed to re-use [aka borrow] it):
(1) Take note of the MSA assignment, which you will find inserted into the title of the thread.
(2a) For the NEW Category, take your photo(s) according to the assignment guidelines. You are expected to shoot something new rather than grabbing from your archives. The exposure must happen during the period of the current MSA theme - usually one month - and must of course be submitted during that period.
2(b) For the OLD Category, you can use thematically appropriate Photos that you have taken in the past.
2(c) For either the NEW Category or the OLD Category, photos must originate as something that is consistent with Photrio's Analogue only section principles - i.e. using traditional (non-digital) processes. Scans from prints, slides, or negatives are permitted, but any digital adjustments should be strictly limited to what would be acceptable in the Photrio analogue only galleries. Please be sure to label which Category (OLD or NEW) your submission belongs in. Film and exposure information plus any special technical information is also good.
(3) You can post your photo in the MSA Gallery, or you can host your photo elsewhere and link to it in the thread, or, you can post it as an attachment to a message in the thread and it will show as a clickable thumbnail.
(4) It's all for fun, there are no prizes.
(5) at the end of the MSA, the previous winner who chose the theme:
(a) is encouraged to nominate from each of the "OLD" and "NEW" categories one photo that is the best photo in that category that illustrates the theme; and
(b) in any event, will choose (from those category "winners", if applicable) the single photo that is the best photo submitted as part of the current MSA that illustrates the theme.
The member submitting the "winning photo" will be declared the MSA "winner" and will have the opportunity and responsibility to choose a theme for the next MSA, and then choose a new winner from the submissions that follow.
Additional hints about uploading your photographs...
(6) How to upload to the MSA gallery: You perform the upload in the same way you would upload to the standard gallery, except you press the "'All subscriber galleries", you find a drop-down menu and press the Monthly Shooting Assignment, thats it.
(7) You can instead, attach your image to a post in this thread. Or you can link to an image that is hosted elsewhere - please be sure all members will have access to such images, and that the links remain current.
8) Most importantly, have fun!

Here are a few examples just to get the ball rolling.

I like this theme @jeffreyg , it really speaks to me
I've tweaked the thread title so as to make t stylistically consistent with the rest - my apologies - and will do my mini-moderator things with Sticky threads and updating the themes to date list.

I felt obliged to keep the ball rolling with a NEW shot.

"Monologue"

Shot and developed on May 3rd 2026 - Ilford HP5+ (ISO 400) - Instant Mytol 1+1 (12.5m - 1st min ag. + 10sec/min ag.) - Other info in the gallery entry

And another NEW one

"Beware"

Shot and developed on May 3rd 2026 - in the same roll as the previous one. More info in the gallery entry.

How about a confessional, in an old church, constructed in 1905, in remote Skatin, BC, photographed about 12 years ago?
HP5 8x10. Semi-stand in Pyrocat-HD.

This is an old photo from a few years ago in NYC. The lady caught me taking the photo so I said hi and made an excuse I was aiming at the Empire State Building. Rolleiflex 3.5F TMY

IMG_0647.jpeg

And the third "NEW" one, still from the very same roll as above.

"Connected"

Shot on May 3rd 2026 - HP5+ (ISO 400) in Instant Mytol 1+1 - A lucky mixture of natural and artificial light in a mall - probably EV 9 or EV 10 (I am very bad at record-keeping, sorry!). I guess I can call it a day, as I have never got more than 2-3 shots from the same roll that I "kind of think I could almost like enough...." :D

We are half way there with plenty of time to post and join the fun. Just to keep things going here are a couple (not in the running) but which some may enjoy.

@jeffreyg the photo of the people standing around, on their phones, is excellent! Perfect capture of society today. Reminded me of my teaching days, on field trips 😄

@Andrew O'Neill thank you for the compliment. I forgot where I took that. The people were at a bus stop and didn’t seem to know each other. Even though I was using a 2 1/4 no one even the dog which I felt really added to the composition never looked at me although I was close and the shutter could have been heard. 😁
The gelato sign was here in Miami in the Wynnwood section where most of the buildings have been painted by street artists. Plenty of photo opportunities there if anyone happens to visit Miami.

[New] My two submissions, shot near the Portobello school across the street from our home here in Portobello, Dunedin, NZ. That's the creatively named Signal Hill with the cell tower atop it in the distance. Shot while taking the baby for a stroll a couple weeks ago. Taken through my Nikkor 105mm f2.5 on my Nikon FE. Film Delta 100, developer DD-X.

And actually, here are some [OLD] ones which fit the theme. I couldn't help myself. They're from the pregnancy and early days with our little one. My favourite is the first one, with the cat and my pregnant wife having a silent conversation, presumably about sharing that hobnob biscuit (that was underexposed very shakily at night on HP5+ and pushed I think +2 or +3). Makes us both crack up every time we see it. Got her permission to post the next 2 - NSFW. And the one with grandad has what I find to be a nice dreamy quality to the missed focus (or whatever I did wrong there).

Image taken just an hour ago. I left my sun lounger in the morning rain. I am always fascinated by the pattern that forms on the wet mesh material before it is dry. It looks somehow "digital". This image - taken on analog film of course - may fit into the topic of this month MSA: "communication"?

Location: my balcony
Equipment Used: Mamiya RB67, Sekor C 127mm/3.8, 45mm extension tube
Exposure: 0,5 s at f22, with mirror lock
Film & Developer: Fuji FP-100C glossy instant film

It’s certainly binary. Nice shot!

The time has come again to select one from the interesting and well done submissions from the May MSA on the theme of "communication". My selection is from @Rayt of the three people. The two men are obviously communicating over something funny and the woman who was described as being displeased with the photographer is certainly communicating with the expression on her face.
congratulations @Rayt and thank you to all who joined in the MSA.(I cropped it just for display)

That's a wonderful shot indeed. Congratulations to @Rayt and many thanks to @jeffreyg for this great monthly theme. Looking forward to hear what @Rayt will choose for June now.
