MSA O/N March 2024- "Hallways"

I’ve chosen “Hallways” as the MSA theme for March 2024. Please remember to identify your submissions as “new” or “old” and include the camera/ lens/film that you used.

Here are several example images (old) to give you some ideas for getting started. These were taken at various college campuses that I’ve taught at over the years with my M3/35mm Summaron f2.8 and Elmar 90mm f4 with HP5+.

I love the timing of this theme. I have been thinking lately that I would like to retake this photo and try a different angle.

I sued electronic flash (Metz CT1). The place was really dark and abandoned in general.

New:

The tunnel that connects the East and West wings of the National Gallery of Art here in DC is also a light sculpture that changes and plays as you move through it on the moving walkway. Shot with a Lomo LCA-120. Film is Tri-X 400. Developed in Pyrocat HD.

Some magnificent images have certainly been posted this week! It was a crazy busy work week for me and I’m glad to finally be able to plug back in again.

@skylight1b-

I love this angle, the choice of lens, and the visual atmosphere that you created. I’m curious as to what new angle you might want to try. Please do consider doing that.

The rust on the cell block bars along with the dead leaves on the walkway that match the color is my favorite aspect of this composition. In the Fort Jefferson image, the light pouring into the hallway is wonderful. I very much like your exposure choice .

An excellent subject choice and interpretation for our theme. Of the two, I like the lighting and perspective that the first image gives. And the debris on the floor that has collected from the deteriorating ceiling above is my favorite detail in it.

Now this one creates an intriguing visual mystery for me. “What might lie behind that gate which blocks this passageway?” Very nice!

Thank you, @russljames! I walk down this hallway/tunnel regularly at work and always wonder if I should try to take another picture aimed at the end point. It might ruin some of the magic.

@skylight1b-

I think the best way to find out is to take a few shots from that perspective. If you have a wider-angle lens, you might also try getting closer to the point where the hallway starts to bend to the right and shoot from there. Perhaps it could be possible to more or less keep this same perspective, with the end of hallway being visible also . Either way, I hope you do experiment!

Thanks! I am not sure, but I think they just stacked pallets there to block it. But the idea is the same.

This was my first time ever using a plastic tank. Using an AP compact tank and Flinn thermometer. Also developed not using 68F/20C. I used the Digital Truth's online calculator to get adjusted times for other temperatures. I realize this makes things much more relaxed for me. Just measure temperature and use the chart.

Flatbed scans show some minor funkiness going on but the prints themselves look all right. I had thought of saving up for a film scanner but I prefer keeping things analog as much a possible.


Hasselblad 501C, Kentmere 400 at E.I.200 and Multitone RC Pearl paper. I am still playing around with this paper. Liquidol was diluted 1:18, half dilution.

I like the repetition and golden hue. Has that backrooms feel to it.
