One last bump. What do you have that's new or old that meets the MSA criteria this month? Do share.

There you are.

OLD (2023). Mamiya C220 and Hasselblad SWC. Neopan 400 in D-23 1+1.

This hydro power station was built in two stages between 1898 and 1905. It is now being razed: what you see on the photos does not exist any more.

"House for sale" - Tight shot of a house that is for sale. Located just before the Coolidge bridge in Hamp. Front looks caved in with slanted beams and very untidy. A definite fixer-upper and at a bargain price, me thinks. I wanted to back away slightly but then I would have been in traffic and there are no sidewalks on the other side, only a ramp that leads to highway I-91.

I feel kind of uneasy looking at this. I think I will pass as being the buyer of this house. Too many possible light leaks, lol.

Hassleblad 501C with 80mm lens
Kentmere 400 at box speed. 1/60 at f/8. Barry Thornton's two bath D23 with metaborate, 5 minutes for both baths at 69.5F/20.8C
Inkpress Multitone RC pearl paper, f/22 for 12 seconds. Liquidol developer

this is from 2010 in a brief period where I didn't own a film camera. Eos 20d Ef-s 17-85 at 85mm. A tiny bit of contrast adjustment and some re-sizing. Thinking about how land/home values have changed since then, I may drive out to this site and see if anything still remains.

What about Bob, that is brilliant. I would have thought you may have dared yourself to stand in the middle of the road, you know; live a little dangerously.

And Now, Laydeez And Germs .... Our June 2024 MSA Winners

I chose this subject because I do a lot of this kind of work, and especially abstracts to be found within it. Many of the contributors had nice expositions of the idea of "decay" However, I looked specifically for those images the idea of finding beauty within that decay.

Best Old: @warden Post #31 first image of window and railing

Beyond the fact that this is executed with great technical skill, I kept coming back to this image for its sheer artistry. The swoop of the banister juxtaposed against the echoing arcs of window and surrounding frame structure all overlaid on the patina of the wall is just beautiful to look at. To my eye, this is compositionally flawless. The only very minor nit I have with the image is that I'd like to have seen just a touch more detail in the door opening in the upper left.

A beautiful piece of art that really captured the idea of find that beauty within the decay.

Best New: @Ivo Stunga Post #17 last image of factory floor

I kept landing on this one because of how it expresses light. The window light illuminating the plants to brighten a shabby factory, balanced with pitch perfect composition, makes this a really beautiful image of decay. The increasing darkness as the image recedes to the back of the building acts to further emphasize that play of light.

I think what I ended up liking the most about this is that is about how the light is creating the beauty in the scene rather than just illuminating hidden or existing beauty.

Best Overfall: @warden Post #31 first image of window and railing

This was tough to call because they are very different images. But this image is the one I came back to over and over again.

Congratulations @warden. You can expect the usual level of fame, notoriety, and wealth that follows an MSA winner

AND ... you are hereby handed to scepter of the July 2024 MSA. Find us something fun to do!

@MattKing I formally request that you be on the hook for a "Best MSA of 2024" judgment at the end of the year - unless you win one of the months, then one of the other mods should do it

Thank you sir! I really appreciate your comments on that image. It was made some years back inside of a now closed penitentiary in Philadelphia, and I was struck with how beautiful it was in parts of it. I mean, not pretty enough for and extended stay, but... ;-)

I'll post a new theme tomorrow. Does anyone know if there is a list of past themes around? I wouldn't want to repeat a recent theme.

Thanks @chuckroast for a good theme, and an excellent job of "judging".
And thanks to all who participated. Congratulations to @Ivo Stunga and @warden for being recognized for their very fine submissions.

Yep - you can find it as a Sticky in this sub-forum. It was quite a job putting it together - I wasn't the only one who contributed to that - and I update it each time. Here is the link: https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/msa-themes-to-date-june-2024.156455/

I look forward to see what warden comes up with next - when you start the new thread, just follow the format of previous MSAs, and I'll help with any tweaks that may be necessary. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need help.

I've actually been a "mini-moderator" of this activity since before I was a full fledged moderator. I took over the reins several years ago. The whole thing started up about 18 years ago, with this thread started by @david b: https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/monthly-shooting-assignment.20445/

But I don't think I'll volunteer for "best of the year" judging activities. In the past, found it tough enough to "judge" a single MSA, for those times when that task fell to me. But if someone wants to undertake the task of starting such a discussion, I'd say: "go for it!".

Now that I think about it I could have snagged that detour sign that was a few blocks away for a few minutes. 😁
