Rachelle has asked me to start a new thread for the next MSA with my chosen theme, which is “Negative space”. I’ve added my own entry as an example of what I think is a composition in keeping with the theme. The image is 35mm HP5 taken with my Nikon F2, and the print is a untoned lith print. As this is the first time I have created a new thread and chosen a theme, I hope I have done this correctly and that my choice is a suitable one.

{Moderator's addition}

Submissions can be OLD prints/negatives/transparencies that were taken earlier in the year (or prior)
Submissions can be NEW prints/negatives/transparencies taken during this month

Great theme David. I'll do a couple of minor edits to the thread title, add some of the normal administrative stuff to your opening post, make the thread a sticky and update the list of themes used.
And in the interest of contributing, a visual pun on the theme of "Negative space". It is a digital image (therefore ineligible). It is old too.
Please forgive me the pun!

It might be ineligible but still a nice example of negative space.

Thank you Matt.

Hmmm this is an interesting theme.. never have gotten into this photo mindset before, so taking a look at some of my old images we came up with this selection.

As we understand it the negative space in the image is suppose to center you on an object in that image.
Does this fit that understanding, or is there to much detail included?
Love to hear your feedback, perhaps with some more examples. ;-)

Another old one, from 2013.

I love this theme, will have to go through the archives to see what I can find that fits. Or better yet, go out and shoot some new stuff! (I do have some camera/film testing to do after all...)

Do I have to draw a picture for you? :whistling:

Sometimes, a title is a verb, not a noun.

And with a theme of Negative Space, sometimes the subject isn't in the foreground.

This is more about undifferentiated space rather than negative space. David's lead off pic is what I would call classic, Asian negative space, which has been a huge influence in my paintings and pastels.

I have a lot of photos like that, but this one interest me because I don't remember where it was made (other than somewhere here in Tucson), or what it is, really. Inside and outside are almost the same thing, and the framing around the real image is as important as the image. I knew I took it recently here in Tucson, but where or what it is exactly, who knows? Nikon n8008s, Leicaflex 90 2.8 lens w/ Y. fltr, Foma 100 in F76 Plus.

First one here is odd. My eye goes to the space to the right of Linda, not her. I really miss that Kodak C41 B&W film. The second pic is because the motor drive stopped at the end of the roll. Or something. The L side is perfect, the R side is somewhat distracting.

New:
Century plant in bloom .. 3x4 Speed ~ Arista 400 @ 200 ~ f16@125

CenturyBloom Arista400@200 .jpg

"The century plant, Agave americana, is monocarpic, meaning it will bloom once in its lifetime. That bloom may not appear for 10, 20 or more years, depending on the climate. Many species in the genus Agave flower just once, although there are a few that are repeat bloomers.

The name “century plant” comes from the fact that the slow-growing plant takes years — although not 100 — to flower."

Then someone may cut it down to make an North American non Aboriginal didgeridoo from it.

Well Sirius that would not work, but here are some other uses ;-)

Agave americana, commonly known as Century Plant, has antiseptic, wound-healing, and anti-inflammatory properties, which explain its uses externally as a medicinal herb to treat burns, bruises, minor cuts, injuries, and skin irritation caused by insect bites.
