New theme for May-June 2017.

Inspired by recent marches for science, the next Monthly Shooting Assignment is "Experiment!".
Please interpret widely. It doesn't have to be something new to the world, just new to you.
Develop your first roll of film; use a different format; try a new alt process; photograph something you never have before.
Maybe document a baking soda/vinegar volcano with your kids, or make something daring in the kitchen, or use power tools for the first time. Photograph your adventure and share with us. I always love the stories behind an image, so share those too.

Hope this inspires many of you - members and subscribers, old hands and first time participants in the MSA.

Image should be shot during May or June of 2017 (honour system), uploaded to this thread and/or the MSA gallery. The winner will be picked by July 1st, and your prize is to pick and judge the next theme.

Great idea! I always like themes that can be either a noun or a verb .
Here is a link to the guidelines for the Monthly Shooting Assignment ("MSA"): (there was a url link here which no longer exists)
If anyone is a member and not a subscriber, we will do our best to work around how to get you access to the gallery uploads.
I'll change the thread title slightly, to bring it into the same style as all the rest. I'll also make this the new "Sticky" thread.

A very good theme for a MSA.

For those who are new, here are some rules for the MSA:
* All images must be taken between May 1st and June 30th 2017.
* The image must be made analogue: no computer enhancements, digital internegatives, etc. allowed.
* There really is no problem with correcting out those scanning introduced unwanted elements, but no other Photoshop tinkering please.
* You can post the results here and in the MSA Gallery not later than June 30th.
* After that date the entries will be judged and a winner will be announced.
* The winner may host the next MSA.
* You can find all (there was a url link here which no longer exists).

Happy shooting!

Experiment: making a paper negative (on b&w photographic paper) with my LF camera (a Russian FKD 18x24 cm) using my hat as a shutter. I photographed the inside of an old church in Naarden, The Netherlands. This is a beautiful church with a wonderful wooden, painted ceiling and a beautiful organ. It's also the location for the annual Mattheus Passion performance.

I loaded a sheet of photographic paper in the wooden film tray and exposed it at ISO 3. Since it was indoors, I got an exposure time of 54 minutes. Since the lens has no shutter, I used the lens cap as a shutter. There were some visitors in the church, but they don't show in the negative. One person stopped for about 5 minutes to look at the organ and appears in the image as a ghost.

I hope to use this paper negative for making some alt-photo prints in the future (maybe some salt or albumen prints?)

That's beautiful Bert! I love the warm browns here. Will definitely look forward to whatever alternative versions you do with this.

Thanks, LAG!
Anyone else got a last minute experiment to share here? It's almost June 1st so only 4 weeks to go within this MSA!!

(just a friendly warning for time flies when you're gonna experiment ...)

I've got one in mind, but haven't started yet. I can't believe a month has gone by already! I'm not sure I'm going to pull it off.... I need a transparent 5x7 negative ( i.e. not a paper negative! ) .... I have a 5x7 camera but it needs a little work first and it's getting late to order film. It might end up being a photogram if I can't dup a negative in time.

Also I don't have a clue if what I have in mind will actually work :D

Thank you Bert, Bertus and LAG for your entries.

Is that your first paper negative, Bert? Impressive. My first attempts were useless.

Bertus - Panalure paper - looks pretty good. This is the paper meant for printing colour negs as B&W, right? I'm assuming it isn't produced anymore. Looks pretty good. How expired is it?

LAG - interesting colour shifts with the expired chemistry. I'm wondering if this was an on-purpose or accidental experiment. (I manage quite a few accidental experiments myself.) Either way, thanks for being the first to enter.

Anyone else got ideas tumbling around?

Let's say that I knew it could happen, but I didn't know the way it would be. Thanks!

I've made some tests before, but this is the first serious one with the Russian FKD (18x24 cm) camera.
I also made a very large one with a ducttape-cardboard-pinhole-camera size 20x24 inch for a MSA in 2014.

I like the coating stripes, and the texture of the paper too. Thanks Bertus.

Here's my experiment:

A friend gave me a box of RC paper left over from a photography course quite some time ago. She'd stored it in a filing cabinet. Very badly fogged. I've always meant to try lumen prints, so here's my chance. My first 3 attempts......
