A New Year has started and it has fallen to me to choose the next theme. After looking through all the previous ones (more about that later) and considering how things like the seasons and photography seem to have rhythms of their own it dawned on me that therein lies inspiration.
So the new MSA theme is "Rhythms".
Interpret that in any way that seems fit, and photograph away!
Here is the link to the MSA guidelines: https://www.photrio.com/forum/threa...gnment-msa-guidelines-revised-2015-07.126124/
A reminder that we continue to operate this "Assignment" with "analogue" constraints. If you are going to be doing any manipulations, they need to be "APUG" type manipulations - done with either light, camera, darkroom tools or physical manipulations - no digital manipulation.
The normal rules are that all photos need to be taken no earlier than the beginning of the MSA period - January 1, 2018 on.
Matt.
PS Any time I have had the task of choosing a theme, I have tried to avoid choosing something already chosen. After more than ten years of the MSA (yes, really!) that has become more challenging, so in order to aid in that effort, I have updated some old thread titles and prepared a list of all the themes to date. You can find the list here: https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/msa-themes-to-date-january-2018.156455/

Thanks for the list Matt - I did that myself a few years ago when I had to choose the theme. I'll be going out today specifically to do some shooting, I will definitely keep this theme in mind!

I guess there's rhythm in repetition...

Yeah, rhythm is repetition, but usually the concept of rhythm is movement, a challenge in capturing in a still photo image...
Like the clothes in the machines above... going round and round.. :unsure:
Its a challenge, .. maybe a time lapse of something.. hmmmmmm...

That's true. I guess for me in this image the circles remind me a bit of a musical score...

Don't know this fits in the theme: a Droste effect, Image-in-image.
This is a carbon print on FB paper (Imago) with a hybride tranparancy negative, 2,5 % dichromate 1 minute UV- 1 hour pressure, 10 min washing in water.

Yes indeed... the result is very different for me, so we are a lost in space newbie to this type process, so a few questions if that's alright.
So 'hybride' as in hybrid?
As in the image added, for the Droste effect? .
And the 1 hour pressure was to join the two together?
or... ?
Thanks for any clarification... an incredible shot with its mix.

The imageshot is what it is, so no digital manupilations but there is used an internegative (digital print) for enlargement. The 1 houre presure is to join the tissue and FB paper together.
I realise this is rare for this MSA and moved the image to the standard galery.
Unfortunately there are more processes like this with use of an internegative that I cannot show in the MSA: alternative hybride processes,
Such as Cyanotype on paper and glass, saltprinting, vanDyke brown, liquid emulsion on paper and glass, etc. etc.No problem at all, there are lots of standard processes, I"ll be back!

I shot some film for the MSA, but I have what is probably a crazy question. I just finished printing my images (my first time back in the wet darkroom in 30 years!!) and I don't know how to get them from paper images uploaded to the gallery. Is it permissible to scan the print? I appreciate all the help. I am loving being back into black & white film photography and this web group is amazing.

Not only permissible - it is encouraged!
We accept scans from negatives or slides, but we love scans from prints.
You will need to re-size your scan to fit it within the upload requirements - don't hesitate to ask for help if you have difficulty.

Looks great. Could also be titled "Icky Thump", but I think that is taken :smile:.

I've had something in mind ever since this started, have made about 8 or 10 attempts at it so far...none of them were quite right. Finally saw it an hour ago driving home from work today w/o a camera. When I left this morning, I even thought of grabbing a camera just in case, but for whatever reason, I didn't. Wished I'd had a camera for a couple other shots too... the light was really nice today.

Today is nominally the last day of the current MSA (where did the month go!).
I won't have a chance to fully review the submissions and decide on the "winner" until tomorrow in the afternoon, so if you have any more entries, you have until tomorrow at noon Pacific Standard Time to submit!

This was a relatively quiet MSA, but nevertheless the high quality of the entries made it a real challenge to choose one over all the others.

Among other things, I was intrigued by the fact that we started with NedL’s pinhole image and finished with awty’s Holga image, with all sorts of interesting and more traditional approaches between.

I’ll start first with a listing of the submissions, along with some comments.

Starting first with the images posted in the Photrio “Monthly Shooting Assignment” Gallery:
1) NedL’s “Rhythm (of redwood trees)”
a very satisfying use of pinhole. The tones and curves repeat themselves rhythmically - not unlike the cycles of life experienced by these trees, which may very well have seen many such rhythms and cycles;
PhxMedFormatPhotog’s following four entries:
2) "We'll Cross That Bridge When We Get There"
Engineering sometimes seems to compel rhythmic patterns. These bridges are an excellent example, and this photograph captures that rhythm well;
3) "Falling Off The Beat"
I’m not sure which rhythms are stronger in this photograph - the rhythms of the repeating shapes or the rhythms of the passing decades, as structures fall and into decay. Either way, this is an interesting approach to the subject;
4) "And The Beat Goes On"
The repeating shapes are strong in this photo. The foreground is, however, slightly distracting. Still a good submission though;
5) "Round And Round"
Repeating circular forms and rhythm go hand in hand. This is an interesting photograph of interesting (circular) equipment;

And then the images posted only in this current MSA thread:
6) peter k’s “Roots of Rhythm”
An example of form where there aren’t repeating identical shapes, but instead a more long term, organic approach to complementary shapes. Nicely photographed too;
7) mooseontheloose’s “Laundry”
It has been a long time since I had to rely on shared public laundry facilities, but seeing this photo brought me immediately back to the memory of rhythmic repeating shapes and patterns of light, along with the rhythm of the sounds of the machines as they roll and rumble in their appointed tasks. In this case the image tone and even the signage and the chairs contribute to the visual rhythms. In my case, the parts of the image that identify it as clearly being from Japan add an air of the exotic, although I expect that if I were living in Japan this would appear less exotic and more mundane.
8) Bertus’ “Drost-Rhythms”
This is a really strong submission - the concept of an image within an image provides a really interesting take on the subject of rhythm. The image we see of the print indicates as well to me that the print itself has its own sort of tonal rhythm. I think, unfortunately that it may not comply with the current MSA rules, due to use of a digital internegative. We may need to re-visit that issue for future assignments;
9) awty’s “Keeping Rhythm”
When I first saw the thumbnail of this image, I didn’t think a lot of it. But when I look at the larger version, it seems quite compelling. The subject pictured - drums and rhythm guitar in action - is perfectly on point for the theme. And the sense of rhythmic movement and energy combines with the depths of the shadows and the brilliance and blur of the highlights to cause me to look at the result over and over.

So which one to choose?

The submissions from NedL, mooseontheloose and awty are very compelling, as well as PhxMedFormatPhotog’s "We'll Cross That Bridge When We Get There". Bertus’ submission would have also made this list, if I didn’t (unfortunately) think it necessary to disqualify it due to the involvement of a digital negative.

It is a tough task, but I’ve decided on my choice.

I’ve chosen PhxMedFormatPhotog’s "We'll Cross That Bridge When We Get There" as best reflecting this theme, which means that he will be the one who gets to choose the next MSA theme - for March and April 2018 - and he will also get to choose the next “winner”.

I see that March is his birthday month. So I’ll say congratulations, and Happy Birthday!
